Because of ithe discovery being made so elose to Cobalt, and on a wateor route that has been prospected before, it is exciting considerable interest in mining circles. Last year a test hole for oil was put down chalf a mile west of the T. N. 0. station at Haileyâ€" bury, but without results. The new find will be keenly watched as a comâ€" mercial quantity of the oil would mcan a big boom for the North."‘ ‘*‘The find is reported to have been made close to the water line, in a shale or sandstone formation, but the other rock formations, consisting of Lorrain arkose, quartzite and conglomerate, is against any extensive accumulations. ‘*‘So far, about four miles «of shore line has been staked, most of the hold ings being south of Paradis Bay. The last claim was staked Saturday evenâ€" ing, about a half mile from Martineau Bay. Samples of water from a stream running across one man‘s property have been bottled and, after being alâ€" lowed to stand, a *‘ thick substance‘‘ resembling oil gathers upon the surâ€" face. The water has been sent away to be analyzed. ‘*The possibility of there being oil in the underlying formations of Haiâ€" leybury, and in the surrounding disâ€" trict, has been frequently discussed, and last week at Paradis Bay, ten miles below Haileybury on the Ontario side of ‘Lake Temiskaming, seepage and shales ‘that burn have caused something of a small rush to the area. â€" The first on the spot Jast week were J. C. * Donald, who appliâ€" ed for boring permits on about half a mile square, J. T. ‘MeMahon, on a third of a mile square, and C. F. Saunders, whose application is for about a mile square. The Mining Act allows boring permits to be given on a mile square. Considerable interest was aroused recently by the ‘*Oil Rush‘‘ in the Haileybury district. Matters are now in the stage, pending anâ€" nouncement of the analysis of the various samples of fluid seceured by the prospectors for oil. Then, further, there are three diamond drills at work on the sand plains west of Moneta. The diamond drilling shows that the Camp is preparing apparently for an exâ€" tensive programme of development. ‘*‘There is a big boom coming, and coming â€"soon, to the Poreupine Camp‘‘ says this ‘‘man about town,"‘‘ ‘ ‘"and it will be the right kind of a boom, steady and permanent.‘‘ MUCH DIAMOND DRILLING IN PORCUPINE DISTRICT. ‘*Opportunity lost, however deplorâ€" ed, is eternally gone and never restorâ€" ed.
