OE CA A DA Serbian Tells Strange Tale About Getting $600.00 From Ausâ€" trian‘s Bank Account South End. Before Mr. Justice Kelly and a jury at the High Court at Haileybury on Wednesday of fast week, Joseph Dynnan, a Serbian, told a pecultar story to explain his side of the case in the matter of the charge against him. of securing $600,00 _ from the bank aceount of Frank Hetman, an Austrian, by forging a cheque on the Bank of Toronto at South Porenpine. Dynnan was committed for trial on the charge some weeks ago by Magâ€" istrate Atkinson, and at that time it was understood that other â€" charges would also be laid against him for other matters, the Chief® of â€" Polece from Troquois Falls coming here with witnesses to identify Dynnan as the man â€" responsible â€" for _ the â€" serious wounding of another foreigner _ at the Falls some months ago. On Wedâ€" nesday Mr. F. W. D. Wilkins, manâ€" ager of the Bank of Toronto at South Porcupine, and Mr. P. Carpenter, the teller, gave evidence to the effeet that the Austrian Hetman who could not read or write had an mecount in the bank. When he opened the account, the ledgerâ€"keeper had written a genâ€" eral deseription of him for identifiâ€" ceation. On Sept. 11th a man answer in@ the description, and now identiâ€" fied as Dynnan, had come to the bank leavine Hetman‘s pass â€" hook, registration eard, alien parole eard, ete., and drew a cheque for $600,00, signing Metman‘s name. Next: day the Bank â€" learned â€" that â€" Hetman‘s bank book and other papers had ‘been stolen from his shack. Hetman‘s eviâ€" denee corroborated this, and he said he had given no one â€" authority to sign for him or draw any of us money. â€" The rest of the evidence for the Crown was to the effect that, the police being notified, Constable Rayâ€" croft had arrested Dynnan at North Bay. â€" Dynnan then had $561.00 in his possession, and. the officer desâ€" cribed him as *‘ of liquor and anuite sieck."" Dynnan had ‘been #to GIVEN TWENTYâ€"EIGHT MONTHS FOR FORGEARY his. possession, and the olfhcer desâ€" cribed him as ‘‘full of liquor and quite sick."" Dynnan had been sto Montreal and Sudbury. Later Dynâ€" nan authorized the paying of ‘the $561.00 back to Hetman or the bank. Dynnan‘s own story was an odd one. He said he came to Timmins with about $9000.00 in eash of his own. Here he fell in with two chums whom he ‘could only identify as *‘ Matt‘ and ‘‘Mike."" He said they got him drunk on Sept. 10th, and next day told him he had lost his money in a poker game. Thenthe went to South Poreunine where lhe met â€"**Jake" who gave‘ him some ‘‘awful strong He chad about 15. drinks and then lost count. He was so atâ€" feeted by the liquor that he did not know what he was doing, according to his story, ‘‘Jake‘"‘ gave him‘the bank hbook, passports, ete., and he visited the bank apparently. Next thing he knew che woke up in Monâ€" treal where he found **Matt‘"* and ‘*Mike‘*‘ â€" again. . They. _ told_ him what he had done and advised him to skip to the U.S.A. Dynnan said that instead of anything like that ‘he wanted to come back and pay back the money, and he suggested the was on Iris way to d this when arrested. He had gone to Sudbury to borrow €100.00 from a friend so as to have the full amount ‘he said. The jury did not altogether believe this story, and the Judge said that the offence bore all the marks of being deliberately planned, â€" Dynnan was sent to the penitentiary for two years and four months.
