HMe had been ill about ten days and the local phyâ€" sicians finding that his only hope of ‘recovery â€"was from an operation, seâ€" cured the services of anâ€"outside doetor The operation was successfully perâ€" formed and aftar a time it was indeed hoped that the patient would make a recovery, although his case had been Mrs. DeLong and Miss DeLong left last week for Toronto to visit Lieut. K. F. DeLong who was recently in jurâ€" ed in a aeroplane accident in Texas. Licut. DeLong is making speedy proâ€" gress towards recovery, and expects to return to the Air Work in the near future. a very criticalone. _ He died, hpwover, on Sunday. _ The late Jolhn Baragâ€" wanthi was born in Cornwall, England, and was 35 years 9 months old when death He was a miner and well respected by all who knew him. Sincere sympathy will be given to his widow who has been wesiding here. A brother, Bragawanth, â€" came over from Michigan when word was reccived of the illness, and was here for the tuncr:xl which took place to South Poreupine on Tuesday*t afferâ€" noon. â€" Among the tiwhutes was a beautiful wreath of flowers from the men at the mine. The 99th Anfniversary Church parâ€" ade of the Oddfellows will bhe observed here on Sunday, April 28th., when the local 1.0.0.F., will attend «divine serâ€" vice at St. Matthew‘s Anglican church at 11 a.m. brethren are requested to meet at the Oddfellows‘ Hall at Window cards are out this week announcing the Annual Ball of the Timmins Fire Department, to. be held in the Masonic Hall, on Fnday evenâ€" ing May 24th, Proparations are now under. way to make this the biggest and best social event of the season, and al who know the ability of the Firemen to make good at whatever attempted, as evidenced by past reâ€" cords, will keep this date and event in memory and anticipation,. Rececatly there was a popular story gsoin>z ronnd to the effeet that a whole carload of liquor, concealed under a seanty seattening of hay or straw, had been seized at South Poreupine while on its way over the T. N.0. Railway It may‘be too bad to spoil a good story, but when the Timumins Police onqmred at South Porcupime ahuut the matter, Provinéial Officer Wilson‘‘s roply was to the effect that he had seized no such ear. He had heard the story all right, but when be heard it the Timmins police were the fellows who were supposed to have made the seizture. As there has been no seizure of tlis kind at South Poreupine, Timâ€" ming, Porquis Junetion or North Bay or intermediate points it may | thus be taken for granted that the story is not any too true. The inventor of suc4 yarns may have an ingemious imagination, but it is an evil one, nevertheless, for in such cases the mnames of responsible people are hable to be improperly connected with the supposed iNlegality and there is little onportuuity to clear up tihe matter. There will be general sympathy for Mr. and Mrs. C. Wainwright in their bereavement last Thursday when their infant daughter passed away aged 13 months. Death was duec to bronchial trouble and complieations. A eable received this week by Mr. Thos. Strain, of Routh Poreupine, vives the information that lus son, Corpl. T. Strain, Jr., has been scriousâ€" ly wounded. . Corpl. Strain was a contractor in the Poreupine, and uis many friends will wish him speedy and complete recovery. A large and interested audienee listâ€" ened on Sunday evening at the New Empire Theatre to the address on Laâ€" bor delivered by Mr. J. G. McGuire, of Cobzalt, who has just returned from an xut_\nmtu.xml conference. â€" The adâ€" dress was along the usual lines of such addresses. i WAIXWRIGHT â€"In Timminas, on Thursday, April HMth., 1918, the inâ€" fant danghter of Mr. and Mrs. €. On Saturday word was receivyed at South Porcupine that Pte. Dave Brinâ€" tou was among those listed s woundâ€" ed. It is thought that he has beeu among those taking part in the recent great baitle.
