; J.RCORDON : Mr. and Mrs. Robt. LeHeup, of Haileybury, were visitors to the Camp last week. Mr. K. M staff, returne tion tmp to t Mr. Geo. Clark, engineer ol Thompsonâ€"Krist, left last week Council Bluff, Towa, to join the army. A Bridge Party will he held at the home of Mrs. W. H. Wilson, Timâ€" mins, on Thursday Evening, August 16th, under the auspices of the W.A. of St. Matthew‘s church. Games commence at 8 ojclock sharp. Adâ€" mission, 50 cents. Evening‘s enterâ€" tainment, refreshments included. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Tozer will regret to hear of their expected early departure from Camp, but there will also be a compensating pleasure in the knowledge that the removal will mean merited promotion and improved prospects for Mr. Tozer, who is going to another important position with the Canadian Ingersollâ€" Rand Co. at Montreal. Provincial Officer Ackroyd left on Monday for Toronto to visit Mrs. Ackroyd who is in an hospital in the city where she has undergone an operâ€" There was an interesting exlhibit put in the window of the Northern Canaâ€" da Supply Company‘s store last week, in the form of a piece of German airship shot down in France some weeks ago. This souvenir of the war was sent to Mr. R. J. Jemmett by a friend with the 228th in France. This (German airship was brought down by Mitish machine gun fire on July 2nd, and the oceupant of the airship was killed in the descent. The sincerest sympathy of all the Camp will be extended to Mr. Clarâ€" ence D. Evans, of South Poreupine, in the death of his wife and infant son on Saturday evening. Mrs. Evâ€" ans had been in delieate health for some months past, and despite all the skill and attetion of the attending physicians and nurses, mother and child passed away. The funeral on Morday was one of the largest ever seen in the Camp, and this was sinâ€" cere indication of the respect and affection in which the late Mrs. Evans was held by all who knew her, and the deep sympathy felt by all for the bereaved hushbhand. T. N. O. Officer Swan last week arrested a young man in the railway‘s employ on a charge of stealing goods from some baggage. The collection of goods found hidden in the lad‘s room included a prayer book, a bottle of hair tonic, some handkerchiet‘s, a pocket knife and a pair or two of socks. â€" There was nothing of any parâ€" ticular value stolen, the whole list of goods only totalling a value of a few d()llars. [t seemed to be a passing foolish twist, rather than any real criminality, that landed the boy in trouble. This was the view that Messrs. H. E. Montgomery and W. ; Wilson (South Poreupine), Justices of the Peace, took of the matter when the ease came before them, and in view of the lad‘s youth, the fact that he made restitution and expressed sinâ€" cere regret, he was allowed to go on suspended sentence. Geo. Cocilo, an Austrian, hurried into the police station Sunday evenâ€" ing, begging with a thickish tongue for protection from a "little fellow‘"‘ who was also an Austrian. But he did not hurry away again. Instead, Acting Chief Sally gave him the surâ€" est and safest protection for theâ€"evenâ€" ing. â€"According to George‘s story he had gone to an Austrian house where a wedding was being celebrated, and there, he said, he was causelessly asâ€" saulte«l by the aforesaid *‘‘little fellâ€" ow,‘‘ whose name he gave as C. Obriâ€" go. He also mentioned ‘‘booze"‘ and many other things. Monday mornâ€" ing, however, Acting Chief Sally pickâ€" ‘ed up Obrigo, and then the tune changâ€" saulted by the aforesaid *‘‘little fellâ€" ow,‘‘ whose name he gave as C. Obriâ€" go. He also mentioned ‘‘booze"‘‘ and many other things. Monday mornâ€" ing, however, Acting Chief Sally pickâ€" ed up Obrigo, and then the tune changâ€" ed. Both Obrigo and Cocilo explainâ€" ed that no one but themselves had ever done anvthing wrong, and they ervy, J.L $10 and both del was so anx1o0ous LQ iFC from blame, even at committing himself nearly had to defend they ecame before Mr. erv., J.P. As will be seen by the advertisement elsewhere in this issue the firm of King Fitzpatrick is dissolving partâ€" nership, and hereafter the business of King‘s Amusement Parlors will be arried on by Mr. T. F. King. "Ihe Advance understands that Mr. Fitzâ€" patrick has accepted a position as one of the inspectors for the C. G. R. A. Clarke forâ€" merly of Cobalt, was a deserter from the C.E.F., but instead of this report being founded on fact, the exact conâ€" trary was the case. Rev. H. A. Sims recently received a letter from the adjutant of No. 3 Special Service Corps, saying that not only had Pte. Clarke never beenâ€" absent without leave, but he was a most exemplary soldier. The adjutant» was anxious for publicity to clear Private Clarke‘s name from an evil and unwarrarted slur. Provincial Game Waraen Parks was in townmn last week, so they say. â€" For all that many interested people know he may have come to Camp, even "unbeknownst"‘ to himself, for like too many visits of Government officials the trip seemed unknown, unhonored and unsang. In this connection : it may not be amiss to point out that if public servants of this kind would consult the people about the people‘s business they might discover matters of mutual interest and advantage. For instance, if Game Warden Parks had interviewed the Rod and Gun Club he might have secured some useful inâ€" formation andâ€" suggestions, and he would assuredly have given a generous measure of eoâ€"operaâ€" tion. Missg Louise . riends in town One of the finest flower and vegetâ€" able gardens in the district is that of Mrs. D. Cauley, of Gillies Lake, Timmins. The lot used was new land that had never been worked before, and it was literally sprinkled with small stones, but energy and intelliâ€" gent effort overeame all handicap. The result is a very creditable and pleasing flower garden, such as is too rarely seen in the North Land. Mrs. Cauâ€" ley did not forget either that these are war times, and so the cause of Production was also helped by a vegetâ€" able garden. This vegetable garden, like the flower plots, has been a deâ€" cided success. A week or ten days ago, there were putatoes with tops over two feet, and the tubers themâ€" selves of good size, healthy appearâ€" ance and ready for use. Beans, 20 inches high, were well podded and promising. Other vegetables suggest good crops, and these flower and vegetâ€" able gardens have been so generally successful that Mrs. Cauley may well find pleasure, profit and pride in the result of her efforts. hR Mr. Robt.
