The Roll is an Assossâ€" or‘s and Collector‘s Roll combined. This not orly does away with a copyâ€" ing of the Roll for tax collection purâ€" poses, but it also thus does away with the possibility of mistakes in this transfer. The Roll this year not only gives the complete figures of assessâ€" ment as usual, but it provides for further entries when the tax rate is struck and the tax amounts are to be entered. ‘‘They usged fto.Iaugh ‘at Mr. 1. C. H. Sims for putting in a garden here,‘‘ said an oldâ€"timer last week. ‘‘They told him he could never grow anything here. But last year he had the laugh on them all with his fine garden, and this year he has another laugh for in the matter of putting in a anrden, ‘*‘everybody‘s doing it now.‘‘ Nearly every available: and suitable plot in town is being utilized for garden purposes, and some are beâ€" ing used that can hardly be classed as suitable for the purpose. Howâ€" ever, it proves that Friend Sims was right vears ago, and also, better still, it shows that the good spirit of ‘‘Patriotism and Production‘" has taken root and is blossoming in Timâ€" Since Thursday of last week no liquor has been released from the exâ€" press offices here, and the result is that there are bushels of booze piled up for delivery, though not as much as might be expected. The truth is that the amount of liquor coming in by the regular channels to Timmins is much less than might be thought. In a recent week,. for instance, the total nnumber of eases released only totalâ€" led seven. Another week it was only five. The reason for the present 8 on account oL LC 1dVUL :conditions.. It is understood that no liquor will be released to anyone as long as there is a possibility of labor troubles here. This stand is taken not because any disorder is expected from the Union men, but rather beâ€" cause those beyond the eontrol of the Union imight make diffteulties if the liquor came in too freely now. ‘The order not to release the liquor is etâ€" fective also at South Poreupine and Scehumacher. Saturday evening late, or Bunday morning early, 186 chickens arrived in Timmins from Foster, Quebeec. They were shipped when a day old, and came in small baskets, with cheese cloth on the tops of the baskâ€" ets, and the baskets lined with newsâ€" papers. W. S. Macpherson, one of the consignees, says he does not know whether the newspapers used for lining the baskets were printed in papers. . 03. MACPHACLSUL, GVUC .
