A presentation was mad him last week by â€" members friends of the office staff of the D all of whom regret his departure Licat. Gordon and a number of the men of the Poreupine Platoon of the Fourth Forestry Draft had their ‘"‘pictures tooken‘‘ in front of their recruiting depot on the corner of Pine street and Fourth Awvenue on Tuesday afternoon. Many of the men of the platoon are in Toronto, but the little group showed as fine + looking lot of soldiers as could be seon in the proverbial day‘s journey. In the Qld Country there used to be a saying, ‘*Tell ‘your troubles to a policeman.‘‘ In this country there is a disposition to ‘‘pile all the work upon «theâ€" cop.‘‘ â€"With spring> apâ€" proaching,â€"in the dimâ€"dum future, perhaps,â€"iAand 600 or 700 Aliens to be registered each month as a special duty, the police here will have lots to keep them busy. The Advance yould suggest, however, that some little help might reasonably be given Chief Craft by the public in the matâ€" ter of sanitation and the spring cleanâ€" up, if all would get at the, tidying up of yards and the cleaning away of the winter‘s accumulation of waste, ete., at the earliest possible moment. This would not only lighten the Chief‘s duties as sanitary inspector, but it would really add to the town‘s eomfort and cleanliness, and it would also benefit the health of all the citâ€" dzens.â€" Cleanâ€"up, and do it as soon as possible. Do not wait to be foreed, or coaxed, or warned. The large erowd that gathered at the New Empire Theatre on Monday evening was disappointed with the exhibition of hypnotism and sleight of hand given by Dr. Dufresne or Prof. Hart, or whichever name anâ€" nounced was the eorreet one. . The announcement during ‘the â€" evening that certain tricks or parts of the show would be given the following evening instead of then was a furihâ€" er disappointment but the manageâ€" ment of the theatre apparently would notâ€"allow the ‘‘putting over"‘ of this sort of drawing eard for another night, and anpnouncément was made on the sereen that there would be no ‘"‘Hypo‘‘ Tnesday evening. This inâ€" duced the giving of a full program Monday evening by the **hypnotist,‘‘ but he forgot apparently to mismerâ€" ize the people into beilieving that his show was a success. To offset this, bawever, â€"the ~pictures. shown . were specially good, and so the people atâ€" ter all got the wortb of their money. His many friends will regret to irn ‘that Mr. A. ‘of «the cintyre staff, is in Rt. Mary‘s Hosâ€" tal here, suffering with an attack appendicitis, and all will hope For m a spoedy and complete reeovery ed from New York, and the New re Theatre will have the drama inside the next week or two.
