257th BATT. TO GO OVERSEAS THIS WEEK WITH 228TH BATT.: All Recruiting for 257th in Ontario Ordered Discontinued. - Lieut. P.F.K. Gallagher and his staff left here on Friday to report at the headquarters of the 257th Battalion in Toronto. The Militia Dept. has ordered all further recruiting for the Battalion discontinued in Ontario, as it is the intention to send the unit overseas at once. Indeed, it is reported that they will go this week with the 228th Railway Construction Battalion. The 257th has made an enviable record in recruiting. They expected to have two month to reach full strength, but instead they made such progress in the course of one month that they had a total of 850 men, and the authorities decided to put with them one company from the 256th Railway Construction Batt., which has not made such a wonderful showing in securing men. This enables the 257th to reach full strength, and the 256th will be granted further time to fill the ranks of their Battalion. In the final medical examination of the 228th, 39 men were discharged as not up to the standard of physical fitness. Four officers have been taken off the 228th Battalion's list: Major Henry E. McKee, Major E.M. Monteith, Capt. Norman F. McKee and Lieut. Harry L. Donaldson. Lieutenant H. P. Frid has been promoted to the rank of Captain.
