It is published in the hope that when the campaign for funds begins, the residents of Oshawa will understand and support the expansion program, The new expansion will give 290 additional beds. Right now the Oshawa General Hospital is overcrowded. Special medical cases must be treated elsewhere and out-patients sometimes wait long periods of time before treatment. To relieve this unhappy situation, the Board of Direc- tors have recently approved a most extensive program of expansion including 290 more beds and recovery beds (as approved by the Ontario Hospital Ser- vices Commission). It will entail the building of a completely new wing to the present hospital. The proposed plan is the culmination of many long discus- sions, careful research and the acceptance new ideas in hospital organization. When complete, the expansion will provide the citizens of Oshawa with a well administered, efficient and spacious hospital for their needs. New medical made available. The Out-patients and Emergency Departments will have far greater capacity and their own operating rooms. All in all the proposed ex- pansion plan will change the whole efficiency of the hospital. Confidant 0: Denis Given By KEN KELLY OTTAWA (CP) -- Raymond Denis, who plunged from trusted confidant of federal cab- inet ministers to $50-a-week file clerk over the Lucien Rivard scandal, was convicted Friday of attempted obstruction of jus- tice. The 35-year-old Montreal law- yer was sentenced to the maxi- mum two years in prison by Judge Bruce Macdonald of Windsor. Taken pale and shaken from the Carleton County courtroom, he was lodged in a bare jail cell, pausing en route to make a brief phone call, apparently to tell his wife, daughter and par- ents in Montreal of his fate. Denis' trial was the latest and, as Judge Macdonald put it, "inglorious" chapter in a story that began three years or more ago when Denis was executive assistant to the federal immi- gration minister after a period in the same. assistant's post to the justice minister. A 12-man jury pronounced him guilty of offering $20,000 July 14, 1964, to Montreal law- yer Pierre Lamontagne to per- suade Mr. Lamontagne to agree to the release on bail of narcot- ics smuggler Lucien Rivard. JUDGE AGREED Judge Macdonald told the ju- rors he agreed with their ver- flict. In rejecting a defence plea for leniency, he said Denis endan- gered the purity of the judicial system and was guilty of a "most reprehensible" betrayal of the trust of his political su- periors. Of Mr. Lamontagne, Denis' friend and colleague in the Liberal party, Judge Macdonald said he was entitled to "praise and sympathy" for his actions.
