By BRUCE LEVETT Canadian Press Sports Editor Ferguson Jenkins, the first Canadian in more than 50 years to win 2% games in major league baseball, has been named top Canadian male athlete of 1967. For the third year in a row, the honor went to an athlete who plies his trade in Chi- cago. Jenkins, 24, is a rangy right-hander out of Chatham, Ont., who pitches for the Cubs of the National League. He won over hockey player Bobby Hull of the Black Hawks, first-place winner the Apprentice jockey Richard Grubb of Ridgeway, Ont., Ca- nada's top-rider in 1967, came third. The 127 sports writers and broadcasters who voted in the 33rd annual Canadian Press year-end poll gave Jenkins 59 first-place ballots Hull. Jenkins picked up 42 second-place choices and was | third on 15 ballots; Hull was | 40 and 11. RODE SEVEN WINNERS Grubb, who set to 50 for a North American record earlier this year by riding seven winners out of eight races on the same day, got two firsts, nine sec- onds and 46 thirds. Voters were asked to name the top three individual ath- letes in order of preference. Computed on a 3-2-1- basis, this gave Jenkins 276 points to 241 for Hull and 70 for Grubb. ie s. Rwy Sa FERGUSON JENKINS ++ + he won 20 games Vancouver, who won the gold medal in the 100-metre dash | in the Pan-Ams and winger Gordie Howe of Detroit Red Wings of the NHI. had seven points each. Finally I can't stand it any | longer. I walk up to him and say 'Jenkins, you're a starting pitcher from now on.'"' Jenkins went on to win 20 games and become a celebrity Canada Male Athlete, 1967 --he even took a tour with a Harlem Globetrotters basket- ball unit and acted as their advance man \his year. Hull, Ont., is probably the biggest super-star in the NHL with two 50-goal seasons under his belt. Grubb, however, burst onto the sports scene on May 16, 1967. That day, he lost his first | race on an eight-race card then went on to win every other race on the program. He's an aggressive rider, which cost him a total of 50 days in suspensions during the season but he still booted ' home more than 200 winners. from Pointe Anne, | [Tridy, December 15, 1967 | | THE OSHAWA TIMES, "DART RESULTS SOUTHMEAD The team standings are as follows: Fire Birds 27, Slow Starters 25, Hippies |25, Sad Sacks 5 2, River is fs 21, Misfits 19 and Feather Dusters 8.
