The new MPP for Ontario South has been attending meet- ings, studying legislative pro- grams and proposals and form- ing positions of his own in the past few weeks. Since his election Oct. 18, Mr. Newman has attended two Con- Servative caucus meetings, the Confederation of Tomorrow Con- ference, several meetings with- in his riding and most xf his evenings "are spent with dele- gations or at meetings." He is working for or zgainst Several programs and prac- tices. "I'm seeking an extension of the GO system at least to Whitby," he says. During his campaign he xt- tached a great deal of impor- tance to preparation for what he feels is the inevitability of re- gional government. He is still concerned with the matter. "IT strongly oppose the county- wide board of education sys- tem,"' he firmlv declares. 'We should try in this area as well as in all others to gear for re- gional government." He also feels certain inequi- ties are going to show them- selves in the Ontario Milk Board plan which will go into active buying operation in February. The board will, in effect, be limiting the farmers to a certain amount of milk which they may produce for sale. Some farmers will, Mr. Newman predicts, have unreasonable limits placed upon them unless close scrutiny follows the milk board's opera- tions. Party politics are slowly in- vading municipal government and Mr. Newman notes that to make demands on the rest of FULL SCHEDULE SINCE VOTE this was "apparently" the case in the Pickering Township coun- cil elections. "Municipal government." he says, "is one place where an individual should be able to run on his own merits." Mr. Newman said he would back shelter exemption, which would mean $55 to the average Ontario household. But he adds, "IT want to make sure this is passed on directly to the home- owner and not gobbled up by the municipality." As to national issues, he feels housing ought to get priority over medicare. "People are en- titled to their own homes and to a place to live.' On the issue of Quebec and the separatists, he frankly ad- mits he dvesn't know what French Canadians want. He Says, however, that "it's a two- way street. It's fine for Quebec Canada, but they've got to be prepared to make some conces- sions too."' COMMITTEES In the legislature Mr. New- man specifically asked to be put on committees dealing with education, natural resources and mines, labor, agriculture and municipal affairs.' None of these committees will function until January or February. Mr. Newman also takes a great interest in water pollution. He says in addition to tougher anti-pollution legislation, con- ferences and extensive com- munications should be set up between Ontario and Canada legislators and the governments of Michigan and New York State and other U.S. pollution agencies, so that a joint effort can be made to clean up the Great Lakes. » Dr. Thomas E. or John Stacey, » Mason and Town C, Smith. loward annexation n in the fall of large delegation e federal govern- that something be ie development of harbor facilities. ng year a résolu- ed by council ask- h land around the Oshawa Creek be uild a harbor.
