The closing of the 103-mile canal during the Arab-Israeli war in June is costing Egypt an estimated total of $1,000,000 in lost tolls every two days. Egypt says repeatedly the canal will remain closed until total elimination oK.any danger from the east bank) seized by the Israelis in the wak It calls this "'a matter of secu Safety of transitting vessels cannot be guaranteed with Israe- li guns directed at the canal." Israel is set on staying until the Arabs agree to face-to-face negotiations. Flareups of fight- , ing, have been frequent. While their countries may squabble, seamen of Western and Communist nations ex- change friendly visits and com- pete in sports in what one Brit- ish sailor described as "fine companionship." The statue was to have been crowned by an Angel of Peace in white marble, but funds raised by Cobh citizens ran out in 1933. Now Ireland's Arts Council has provided a grant to finish the monument. Memories of the Lusitania are still vivid in Cobh, which at the *|time of the disaster was the British naval base of Queens- town. There are several people still living on the Old Head of Kinsale, 20 miles west, who saw the ship go down, It was history's second hbig- est maritime tragedy after the Titanic, with 1,198 people drowned, among them 353 Cana- dians and 124 Americans.
