ms 18 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, October 27, 1967 BRIDGE By B. JAY BECKER (Top Record-Holder in Masters' Individual Championship Play) 1. You are declarer with the West hand at Four Hearts, North having opened the bid- ding as dealer with a clul, which your partner doubled. |North leads the queen of spades. How would you play the hand? (Assume that the trumps are, divided 2-2 or 3-1.) 9352 @AET @AK3I106 ws 9 Q953 | @Q74 P| oAs3 | @Ko 18 | gees 2. You are declarer with the |West hand at six Clubs. North leads the king of diamonds and continues with the ace. You ruff and play the ace of clubs || North showing out. How would you now play the hand? @kKQ @AI743 wao7ss | N | one o3 WE! 935 AKQo5! 8 | 410762 1. The possible losers are & spade, a diamond and twe clubs, but one of these losers can almost surely be eliminated by taking advantage of the knowledge gained from North's opening bid. North appears to be marked with the Q-J of spades, king of diamonds, and 14.Q or J-J of clubs (possibly lthe A-Q-J), and all that West has to do at the start is visual- lize a later endplay position against him. _ The first step in this direc- ition is to duck the queen of |spades. The purpose of this -|play is to make sure that South |does not later take the lead 'with the ten of spades (if he has it) for the killing return of a Club through the king. After this, the play is fairly automatic. Assume that North continues with a spade. Declar- er wins in dummy, plays a heart to the ace, leads a Jow diamond to the jack, draws the outstand- ing trumps, cashes the ace of spades, and then plays the ace and another diamond. | North wins with the king but must now lead a club or yield a ruff and discard. Either way, declarer makes four hearts. 2. It would be dangerous to try to ruff your hearts in dum- my because South might he short in hearts and overruff. The best method of play is to cash the K-Q of spades and en- ter dummy with the king of hearts. Now run dummy's spades. If South ruffs at any point, overruff, draw trumps, and you have the rest of the tricks. If South refuses to ruff, you take a trump finesse to make the contract. | Of course, South may ruff the |king or queen of spades when you lead them, in which case {you go down, but that is much \less of a risk to run than at- | tempting to trump hearts in dummy. Wire - Tap Rights Asked MONTREAL (CP)--A _ proml- nent Quebec judge has called for definitive legislation which would permit Canada's law en- forcement bodies to use wiree tapping and electronic eaves- dropping techniques in their in- vestigations of crime. Sessions Judge Gerard Laga- niere told delegates attending Wednesday's convention of the Quebec Independent Telephone Association: "It's time that methods of protecting society caught up with the means of preying on it. "While crime rides around in \2 Cadillac, law enforcement {pursues in a buggy." Everyone, including telephone jemployees, recoiled at the pros- jpect of possible police intrusion on public privacy, but already |professional criminals were using all kinds of electronie techniques to achieve their jends. N 0 -one wants to violate the jcitizen's basic democratic right to his privacy, " Judge Laga- jniere said. "But there must be legislation to allow electronic in- vestigation, in certain cases and in certain circumstances en- jdorsed by the judiciary, in the lover -all interests of society."' | QUEENIE "Yours is the kind of beauty that recharges batteries with- out your knowing it..."
