Gulf Scraps First Plan TORONTO (CP)--Gulf and Western Industries of New York says it has scrapped its original jlan to acquire the outstanding shares of Famous Players Ca- 1adian Corp. Ltd. because of ax difficulties with the United states internal revenue depart- ment. Famous Players, with head- yuarters in Toronto, now is owned 51 per cent by Gulf and Western, a holding company. It yperates 308 theatres across Canada, distributes motion pic- lures, and has an interest in a number of Canadian television stations as well as 21 commu- nity antenna television systems. Famous Players officials said Wednesday Gulf and Western is expected to make a_ revised offer shortly. The aim would be © reorganize Famous Players' non-theatre operations into a company with a majority Cana. dian interest so it could grow in he Canadian television indtis- ry. Canadian regulations now re- strict its ownership to 25 per rent of any Canadian television station or antenna system. Gulf and Western would then reorganize its Canadian opera- ions, including its interest in Famous Players, as a separate -orporation or corporations.
