THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, October 16, 1967 AND HERE IS WHY... faxes After close examination of all the available reports and related material, | found that a great deal of action must be taken to ensure that the taxes paid by Oshawa citi- zens are in essence paying proportionately for the services used by them. To take this point one step further the Province should be taking steps to alleviate the already overburdened personal tax situation of the Oshawa community. For instance the Pro- vincial share of school taxes, | believe, should be raised to 80%. | strongly believe in tax reform, but not just to change for the obvious and pressing requirement; but, to instigate a continuous program not only to study taxation under present terms of reference but to consider the needs of the future. Starting now we should develop a program that will solve the problems fairly and logically, education Cost of schools is an ever-pressing pro- blem. | feel that.this situation can be helped considerably by adoption. of two policies. 1.) Have schools designed with a great many common features. 2.) Have one purchasing agent for each area to allow greater volume to take advantage of dis- counts more effectively. Also this would eliminate a great deal of paper work, 1 would also recommend that better langu- age classes be made available to new Can- adians. Also bilingual schools should be provided where the demand is sufficiently great. labour Ontario should retain its lead in having the highest wage levels, pension plans, shortest work week and the best vacations plans in' Canada. This policy is not based on prefer- ential favouritism but on the fact that On- tario has the highest productivity per work- er in Canada. This productivity is a result of the higher degree of automation that exists in this Province. Automation leads us to another problem and that is RETRAINING. Here is an area where continuous effort is needed. The government should strive to ensure that retraining programs are available so that when a particular plant is automated, its workers have ample opportunity to prepare themselves by retraining to update their skills. Ex parte injunctions should be abolished and a closer liaison should be encouraged between management and labour away from the bargaining table. VOTE-POTTICAR GO ALL THE WAY WITH... POTTICARY -- Liberal housing Cost seems to be the greatest problem in the housing crisis today. This fact is com- plicated by the difficulty a buyer has in getting money to make a purchase. This difficulty also affects older home renova- tion. My recommendations are: 1.) Provide mortgage loans at less than 5% for 30 years. 2.) Provide loans for older home im- provement, The red tape faced by home builders should be eliminated so that the plans that allow the working man to purchase housing can move ahead quickly and efficiently.
