You could say that declarer was unlucky to have the ace of spades ruffed on the opening \lgad, but, actually, it would be |more accurate to say that South: jhad only himself to blame for | going down because of his play /from dummy at trick one. He |should have ducked the king of spades in order to positively guarantee the contract. | In the actual hand, East jwould discard a club and ruff |the spade continuation, but the \defense would later take only jone more trick because declarer jcould discard a loser on dum- jmy's fourth spade after drawing trumps. When play starts, declarer can count ten winners consisting of six hearts, a diamond, a club and two spades. All he has to do to protect the contract is make sure of preserving those ten tricks. There is no risk attached to ducking the king of spades in order to guard against the not too remote chance of West's having a six-card suit. This one prudent measure protects against every conceivable cir- cumstance, SPORT BRIEFS NORWAY ELIMINATED SETABAL (AP)--Vitoria Setubal of Portugal eliminated Fredrikstad of Norway from the European Cup of Cup Win- ners soccer tournament Thurs4 day with a 2-1 victory in a sec: onéleg, first-round game. This, in turn, means that the finger or fingers) involved cannot be straight-| ened, but remain bent. The little and ring fingers are the ones usually involved. The cause of this contracture is not clear, but injury does not appear to be a significant fac- tor since the trouble can devel- op in people whose handy are not subjected to strain or trau- ma. It appears more often in men than women, usually after the age of 40, Rarely is there any pain. MAY BE HEREDITARY There may be a_ hereditary factor. It also has been noted that the condition occurs quite frequently in patients who have diabetes or gout--I have seen it frequently in diabetics. Treatment should begin when kinking of a finger is noted. This treatment consists essen- tially of measures to stretch the finger to overcome the contrac- tion. This is effective only when used early. In cases of long standing, sur- gery is ry. This involves loosening the tendon sheath-- is a very aggravating one. It is not a fatal ailment but there is little to do except to keep the pain under control until the infection subsides. The common name for herpes zoster is shin- gles, Dear Dr. Molner: People \keep telling me water condi- tioning is bad for the health, exposing you to everything from cancer to kidney stones. I question such logic. I have a water softener and find it to my liking, both for drinking and washing. -- Mrs. W.K. There is no truth to these scare stories, Some people pre- fer to drink unsoftened water but that is a matter of choice. The one important thing to keep in mind is this: If a per- son is on a low-salt diet (mean- ing low sodium) he usually should avoid drinking softened water. That is because so often the "softening" is a matter of substituting sodium for the min- erals, such as calcium, which make the water "hard." For anyone else, it doesn't matter. Dear Dr. Molner: My _ hus- band says milk in coffee increases the caffeine. I say no. Who is right?--P.G. It doesn't increase the caf- feine. It does, obviously, not amputation, In some increase the calories. a Sunday with St. nals.
