6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, September 12, 1967 < es By WAYNE WALTERS Times Sports Staff New Westminster Salmonbel- lies are slowly chipping away at the aura of invincibility that seemed to surround the Oshawa Green Gaels, coming into their fifth Minto Cup final. Gaels, winners of four con- secutive national titles, as well as holding a 32-game win streak in season play, lost their sec- ond straight game, 12-10, last night and now hold a slim 3-2 advantage in the best-of-seven final, Gaels jumped to an early first - period lead, scoring three unanswered goals in the first five minutes of play. But the Salmonbellies came back strong in the latter stages and held a 4-3 lead after the first period of play. The two teams traded goals in the second frame with New Westminster coming out on top 8-7. Oshawa was outscored 4-3 in the last period. Ray Bennie was New West- minster's main threat offensive- ly, scoring three goals and an assist. Two goals went to Ken Winzoski and Barry Bolton with singles going to Al Lethwaite, Wayne Goss, Kerry Gallagher, Ed Goss and Steve D'Easum. POWLESS PLAYS WELL Gaylord Powelss, who was not checked as closely last night as in previous games, was Oshawa's top marksman with four goals and four assists, He was followed by Ross Jones with three goals and Larry Lloyd, Charlie Marlowe and Phil Clayton with singles. New Westminster goalie Ter- ana ed in his own zone. Both Jim Bishop, Green Gael coach and the crowd were inscensed when a penalty wasn't called. One of the fans then showed his displ e by } hi a soft drink onto the floor. Bishop refused when the ref- eree requested that ry Garrett played an ing game, frustrating Oshawa forwards constantly with key stops. A small battle broke out at the seven minute mark when Oshawa's Don Stinson tangled with New Westminster's Paul Shmyr. Both players received five minute fighting penalties with Stinson collecting a minor as well for checking Garrett in his crease. Penalties in the game were even with each club receiving | eight. Oshawa"s seventh goal was the prettiest of the 'night. Phil Clayton retrieved a loose ball in his own zone and passed to Jim Higgs, who was burst- ing down the middle of the floor. Higgs drew the lone defenceman over and at the last moment passed to Pow- less, who was in the clear. Pow- |less faked once and then put |the ball behind Garrett. | The game was delayed with | ten minutes gone is the second |period when Powless was dump- | Vancouver Lacrossers Intend To Regain Title from the Gael bench go onto the floor and clean up the mess. The referee then retreat- ed to the far side of the floor to wait Bishop out. The. stalemate was broken when Ivan Davies, OLA con- vener, called down from - the press box to have an Auditor- ium attendant look after the spilled drink. WAYNE GOSS HURT Wayne Goss, Salmonbellies' high scoring forward was hurt at the eight minute mark of the third period when he tried to crash between Dave Keenan and Jim Higgs. He fell to the floor, suffering from what was later diagnosed as a minor con- cussion. | | New Westminster coach, | Keith Jackson said after the game, "It's going to be hard to push our guys out of the series after this games" =: [hose Battling Salmonbellies = Continue To Swim Upstream He said the Gaels seemed to get rattled in the third per- iod and this combined with his players coming through with key goals were big factors in the win. . Bishop said, "we played our best game of the playoffs but we committed mental errors jefensively and the Salmonbel lies' took advantage of them." He pointed out that New West- minster scored four power play goals to Oshawa's two. Attendance last night was 3073. The sixth game will be played Wednesday at the Civie Auditorium.
