FREDERICTON (CP) -- Last year only 500 Atlantic salmon returned to spawn in the Northwest Miramichi River of New Brunswick, a river where fishermen say it was once not uncommon to see 1,000 salmon a night. Jack T: H .Fenety of Fred- ericton, president of the Northwest Miramichi Salmon Association, said that a sec- tion of the river has been pol- luted by wastage from a min- ing site, and it is spoiling one of the best salmon rivers in the province. Fenety said the pollution was first noticed in 1957 and in 1960 the association started a campaign to keep the river from being spoiled . He said the river is being polluted by Heath Steele Mines, located in the high country 30 miles northwest of Newcastle, N.B. Untreated water from the mine some- times spilled into the Tomo- gonops River, a tributary of the Northwest Miramichi. Lightning put pumps in the mine's pollution control sys- tem out of order June 25 and untreated water flowed into the Tomogonops. Fenety said salmon swim- ming up the river to spawn turned back when they came in contact with the polluted water. Others swam into the TORONTO was 40 when he collapsed with) a coronary attack. Four years later he runs 114 miles five days a week. Dr. Elliot Heller, senior con- sultant in cardiology at North- western General Hospital, says he has found through cxperi- ments with heart patients that regular controlled ©xercise fol- lowing a heart attack may improve the circulation by increasing the pumping func- tion of the heart. 'FESTERING SORE' He said the mine, produc- ing copper and zinc ,has a settling pool where water from the mine is treated with lime, but added that he does not think it is big enough to handle the job. "It's a festering sore on the landscape of Canada's picture province," he said, describing the pollution problem . The association president said he has suggested to Fish- eries Minister H. J. Robi- chaud that the salmon be transported around the pollut- ed section in tank trucks. Dr. John Sprague, in charge of water pollution research at the fisheries research station at St. Andrews ,N.B., said the prob- lem is "very serious." He said water samples were taken every day during the summer and several times a week during winter months, but no improvement in the pollution level has been recorded since 1960. He said only two-thirds of the salmon which leave the river to go to the sea ever make it back to spawn after natural predators and com- mercial fishmen take their toll. The researcher said four one-hundredths parts of cop- per and zinc in one million parts of water would be lethal to salmon. And it only takes one-third of the lethal amount to make them turn back dowh the river. He said copper and zine are "very, very dangerous for salmon," "The , water is safe for humans to drink, but a salmon is 10 to 100 times an sensitive." Dr. Sprague said the mine has gone to a great deal of trouble and expense to rectify the problem. He said if it had no pollution control system, the pollution would have reached a level that would kill all fish in the river. Natural Resources Minister William R.
