Canada was mentioned as one of the countries. Co. is to be averted. Negotiators return to the bar- faining table today. The cur- rent contract expires at mid- night Wednesday. Walter P. Reuther, union resident, has promised that is 160,000 UAW members employed by Ford will walk off the job if the union does not win the contract it wants to use as a pattern for the other mem- pers of the 'automotive Big Three--General Motors and Chrysler. Ford did agree Monday to discuss in Detroit the UAW pro- posal on Canadian pay. Tre UAW said it would drop unfair labor practices charges against the company filed when Ford at first balked at the idea. While the union cannot legal- ly bargain in the United States for Canadian wages, it wants any new contract to include a clause forbidding a company, from paying union workers out- side the United States less than American workers doing the same task. 149-CENT DISPARITY Tne UAW estimates that Canacian workers now get an average of 40 cents an hour less than their American counter- parts. The union is awaiting a response from GM to a union proposa! that the contract cov- ering 375,000 GM workers be extended if no agreement is reached at. Ford. A similar union proposal is expected to be made to Chrys- ler, which employs about 100,- 000 UAW members. If a strike is called at Ford, the union would allow the other two companies to continue to operate. Reutber said Monday his men would strike even if President Johnson asks them not-to. A team of federal mediators entered the talks Monday. Among the top UAW demands are paying workers a monthly salary as the basis of a guaran- teed annual income and a sub- stantial wage boost.
