When she pam | rritation of the bladder and ANNOUNCEMENT MADE BY PRESIDENT QUEBEC (CP)--The Cana- dian Bar Association revealed at a press conference Monday it has been advising the federal justice minister on the appoint- ment of federal judges. The announcement was made by. Perrault Casgrain, associa- tion president, in the presence of Justice Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The association's advice is given by a nine-member "national committee of the judiciary," headed by Alexan- der J. Campbell of Montreal, a former Superier Court judge. Mr. Trudeau said he consult- ed the committee in the selec- tion of federal judges he has named since becoming justice' rowed from the United States where the American Bar Asso- ciation has a similar commit- tee, as experimental. "T will not consider myse!f bound in any final way by their recommendations," said Mr. Trudeau, who noted that feder- al judges must be named by the federal government. ENSURES CONFIDENCE Mr. Casgrain, of Rimouski, Que., said the association established the committee to help ensure public confidence in judicial appointments. "It consists of the minister submitting confidentially to a select committee a list of names, asking if there is any- thing making any of the candi- comment on the qualifications of persons under consideration, but would not suggest a name. Mr. Trudeau said the delay in announcing the advisory system arose because he wanted to try it out before making it public. Announcement could be interes preted as personal endorsation, but this was not government policy. He liked the way it was working so far. "It may change in the future," he said. "I am very impressed by the American system of. law. I think the Americans are very progres- sive, legally."
