Px, | STOCKS BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Firm Uses Air Bomb Plan To Fight B.C. Forest Fires '|: $338,370 from the Canada Life LANGLEY, B.C. (CP)--Toss- ing plastic bags of water out of an airplane window has become a million-dollar forest fire fight- ing industry in British Colum- bia. Skyway Air Services began fighting fires this way 12 years ago in small aircraft. Today, the company has a fleet of 14 Avenger bombers. "Water is old hat in modern aerial firefighting, and special long and short-term retardents. with fantastic ability to arrest flames, are used," said Percy Lotzer, Skyways assistant gen- eral manager. But B.C. government doesn't have a forest fleet of its own. It contracts the work to eight companies with 46 airplanes-- BONDS TORONTO (CP)--The Cana- dian bond market was unchangéd in quiet trading Wednesday. Forestry officials do not say that air bombing is anything like the total answer, but the planes are considered an inva- luable weapon in battling small blazes before they gain hold. Without them, there would be far more than the 3,200 men and 170 machines currently fighting fires in B.C., which has been plagued by fires this year. CONTRACT DOUBLING This year, Skyway has a basic $200,000 contract with the B.C. government. It is for July and August with a minimum- hour total already used up. The company now is getting an hourly fee, and Mr. Lotzer said "Sit is safe to say the contract will more than double this When the former Canadian Navy dive bombers are not fighting forest fires in B.C., they are 4,000 miles away doing forestry spray work in New Brunswick for a consortium of government and __ industrial groups called Forestry Protec- tion Ltd.
