The acquittal was handed down by Judge Marcel Gaboury of Sessions Court in a 15-page/ judgment that took more than an hour to read from the bench. It was the second trial for Mr. Justice Meunier, who was convicted and sentenced to two years in 1964 for the alleged offence. He was freed on bail of $10,- 000 pending the outcome of an appeal which finally brought about a new trial on grounds that there had been an irregu- larity at the first trial. At the second trial earlier this year no witnesses were called. Both sides accepted that depositions from the first: trial be entered into the record of the second. Tax Burden Concern Seen COBOURG, Ont. (CP)--Mayor J. A. Heenan said Tuesday there is growing anxiety among members of the Ontario Munici- pal Association about the tax burden placed on the municipal home owner through legislation by the senior governments, Federal and provincial goy- ernments pass laws affecting municipalities but are unwilling to pay for what must then be done, he said in an interview before leaving for an Aug, 21 meeting of the OMA at Port Arthur. Mayor Heenan, chairman of the OMAs resolutions commit- tee, said federal and provincial legislation "appears to suffo- cate and throttle urban expan- sion." "There is a. growing feeling that the planning act, for instance, should be only a guide for land use without legal sig- nificance and the final decision should be left to the elected municipal council." The resolutions committee is preparing more than 140 pro- posals to be considered by 900 delegates at the convention. Municipalities should be allowed to collect taxes on gas- oline, tobacco and liquor with the income used to lessen the debt against real estate, he said. Municipal taxes could also be reduced by as much as 30 per cent if public utilities com- missions were allowed to sell their services at a profit. Teachers Get $1,000 Hike TORONTO (CP)--The aver- age salary gain for women public school teachers in Ontar- io this year was between $500 and $1,000, Dorothy Martin, executive secretary, told the Federation of Women Teachers' Associations of Ontario Tues- lay. The 27,000-member federation achieved a long-term goal, Miss Martin said, when the provin- cial government increased the minimum pensions for teachers in January. It was doubled to $1,200. The federation sent nearly $14,000 to teachers in Quebec to help them fight Bill 25 passed by the Quebec legislature in February, she said. The bill restricts teachers' right to strike. Federation president Melba Woolley of Ottawa told dele- gates the challenge facing teachers in the next decade is the need to experiment and the need for fresh thinking about teaching. Tattoo Seen At Ottawa OTTAWA (CP)--Parliament Hill echoed. to the roar of musket and cannon and the wail of the bagpipes over the noon hour Tuesday as the Cana- dian armed forces treated tour- ists and lunching civil servants to a half-hour summary of their touring military tatoo. Governor-General Michener will preside when the 1,700-man cast presents the full two-hour spectacle at the opening of the Central Canada Exhibition here today Several thousand spectators gathered on the lawns of Par- liament Hill Tuesday to watch the servicemen, dressed in uni- forms of various periods of Caneda's development, give a bricf history of military life from the time of Samuel de Champlain to the present. Police Continue Shooting Probe TORONTO (CP)--Toronto police are continuing their investigation of the Sunday night shooting of Toronto bar- ber Guiseppe Oppedisano, 23. Mr. Oppedisano told police he was shot from a passing yellow car while driving in northwest Toronto. He drove four miles to a billiard hall where friends took him to hospital. Police said the bullet entered the back of Oppedisano's neck, passing out along his jaw. ARR RRARR ® © Lucite ALARM CLOCKS Reg. Kmart Price 3,39 Special sam De 9 THURS, FRI.
