LACK OF CONTROL, COST... _. OPPOSED BY COUNCIL | 'Council Votes In Favor County Delays New Ambulance Service WHITBY (Staff) Emer- gency ambulance service for Ontario County received al least a one-year setback Tuesday when county council voted to refer to committee a report on - implementation of the serv- ce. There were two main reasons given by various councillors for the referral. Department of Health said to council the ambulance system would be based on three prin- ciples, the availability of serv- ice, adequate staff and a system of communication. He said existing agreements between municipalities and operators 'would be continued and possibly extended and that new agree- ments with licensed operators counties had shown interest. John Doble, deputy reeve from Brock Township suggested that since the government would have control over operators and agreements they should pay the entire cost. He suggested the county would Jose control of its 25 cents per capita forever if they gave in now. Mr. Doble re- minded council it had endorsed could be set up three months after council gave its approval, East Whitby Reeve John How- den suggested that under the system the provincial govern- ment would be 'whistling the tune" while someone else was picking up the tab. He referred the ambulance service question back to the committee for fur- ther study. ambulance had been used only 17 times since the beginning of the year when the first am- bulance was out on call. Council overwhelmingly voted to refer the matter back for fur- ther study and asked for a draft of the proposed ambulance serv- ice centres in the county. Port Perry Reeve J. J. Ontario County Council was informed by its standing com- mittee on homes for the aged Tuesday it will cost $18,000 to correct a water problem in the new home. Beaverton Reeve William Gillespie told council there is an artesian well in the elevator shaft that can not be stopped and it is pouring 800 to 1,200 gallons of water hourly into the shaft. The reeve also reported that last weekend one of the pumps failed and overnight eight inches of water gathered in the basement of the new nome. EXTRA COST The committee also told coun- cil that the home, Sept. 18 will cost an extra $50,000 to complete bringing the total bill to $1,783,000. Reeve Edward Oyler of Reach Township blamed the architect of the building for locating the home poorly and asked if it was not the responsi- bility of the contractor to stop the water flow from the well. Reeve Gillespie replied that the well could not be stopped and that the water did not ap- pear until after the 60-fvot shaft was sunk. He said the commit- tee was now investigating mak- ing use of the unwanted supply of water. Mr. Gillespie also told coun-| cil if the building had been set} two feet higher it would not} have water problems . and blamed surface w ater for fill- which will| open for resident admission on|asked why an open ditch was moths. not used to carry the water al closed drain which will cost the county $18,000.
