10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesdoy, August 9, 1967 By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor GREEN GAELS cleaned up their quarter-final series in decisive fashion at the Civic Auditorium last night when they | whomped Brampton ABC's 23-4 in. the fourth game of the set. The Gaels came to play -- and score goals -- a fact which they established with authority, paced by Gaylord Powless. "The Chief" was in command last night, with six goals and three assists. He received the sea- son's "most popular player' trophy between periods and was named No. 1 star of the game, at the conclusion of the action: Phil Clayton's deadly passes and alert per- ception earned him six as- sists, plus a goal while the Stinson brothers, Terry and Don, along with Charlie Mar- lowe scored three goals apiece and captain Jim Higgs contributed a pair. It was a great team effort as well as a showpiece of lacrosse WE THOUGHT Brampton deserved the applause they got from the good lacrosse fans and we'll discount the odd cat-call that came from younger, biased rooters No less than three of their stars, including Dave Wilfong, who scored five goals against Gaels in one game this series, wouldn't come to Oshawa to face obvious elimination. Brampton only had 10 play- ers in uniform but those boys gave it all they had -- it wasn't nearly enough -- but at least they played it out to the end and to their credit, let's not forget this was the cleanest game of the set. There was not the slightest attempt by any of the Bramp- ton boys to 'get in a few licks" before the season end- ed. Green Gaels now await the semi-finals, likely against Huntsville Hawks, who cur- rently are disposing of Long Branch. THE SEMI-FINALS, against Hunstville, if they win their Pam Miller Wins Round, ' next game -- will likely start in Huntsville on Saturday night with the second zame back here at Civie Auditor- ium on Monday, «the Gaels' regular "home™ night'. In other quarter - final playoff rounds, Toronto Township leads Hastings Legion 3-2 in games and St. Catharines has the same edge on Mimico Mounties. The Mounties avoided elimination with a 15-8 win last night while Township turned back Hast- ings 16-6 in the fifth game of their series. They play again tonight and Hastings must win or else while Mimico and St. Kitts go at it in their sixth game, tomorrow evening. SPORT SHORTS: BROOK- LIN REDMEN opened their OLA Senior 'A' semi-finals on their home floor last night and had to go all out to turn back Toronto Maple Leafs 10-8. OASA elim- inations in the Oshawa City and District Softball Associa- tion got underway last night at Alexandra Park and the second games will go as an- other doubleheader, Thursday on the same diamond. In the Intermediate 'AA' series, Mis- ter TV Towers whipped Geor- gian Motor Hotel 10-2 but the Junior 'A' game was some- thing else again. Big Pete Landers had to come up witn one of his best games of the season and two teammates hit homers, to fashion a 2-0 victory. Wayne Cheesman and Phil Solomon belted the circuit clouts and Landers pitched a no-hitter, to keep the peppery People's Cloth- ing team subdued.
