6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, August 8, 1967 SPORTS BEAT By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor OSHAWA'S Andy Boychuk earned himself a good slice of Pan-American Games glory Saturday as he cap- tured the marathon at Win- nipeg. Not considered one of the glamor events in track and field, the marathon nevertheless is. the most gruelling. Stamina is the competitor's greatest asset for this event. Boychuk does his running for a Toronto club now although he works in Sarnia. ITALIA SOCCER club will have to overcome a two-goal deficit when it plays Toronto at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium next Saturday. The game should attract the larg- est soccer gathering in sev- eral years, and the local squad will have to go on the attack right from the open- ing whistle if it hopes to take the Ontario cup. OSHAWA GREEN Gaels are within a game of the Ontario Lacrosse Association junior "A" semi-finals, thanks to a 10-7 win over Brampton Armstrongs Satur- day. Gaels entertain the Armstrongs at Civic Audi- torium tonight and they should wrap up the series in this one. If not, they'll get another chance Thursday night, at Children's Arena. LOS ANGELES Dodgers might be out of the National League pennant race but they are still capable of making it tough for the front-runners. The Dodgers _ yesterday stopped league leading St. Louis, much to the delight of clubs like San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Cincin- nati and Philadelphia. You can probably eliminate Chi- cago Cubs from the race be- cause the club isn't too strong in pitching, something a con- tender needs. WASHINGTON Senators suddenly are making threat- ening moves towards the first division in the American League, and when can you remember a _ Washington club going along at such a good clip? It was unfortunate for the long-suffering Senator fans that Cal Griffith moved the old Senators to Minne- sota just when it became a pennant threat, thus doom- ing Washington baseball fol- lowers to many more years of mediocre ball teams. But, Gil Hodges now has the club playing exciting ball and in- terest is picking up in the United States capitol CLOSER TO home, Toronto Maple Leafs, with Oshawa's Johnny Ryan swinging a big bat, are back in the pennant chase in the International League. Leafs are currently the hottest club in the league and with a long home stand still to go they could move right into the thick. of things. Midgets _jtheir first run and the second WINNIPEG--Andy Boychuck, j\a long distance runner from Oshawa, set a brisk pace and led all the way in winning the grueling marathon run at the Pan Am Games. At the half - way mark, Boy- chuk had accumulated a lead of about a quarter of a mile, over Osulio who eventually fin- ished second. Boychuk finished with a burst of speed and collapsed as he crossed the finish line. "I'm fine," Boychuck said afterwards "I'm pust a bit dry." His time of 2:23:2.4 set a new Pan) Am record and breaks the pre- vious record held by J. Kelly Oshawa Legionnaires elimin- ated Peterborough Legion in two-straight games, on succes- sive days over the weekend, to sweep their Eastern Ontario| Baseball Association's PeeWee A' Major semi-final series. Playing in the Liftlock City on Saturday afternoon, Oshawa Pee Wees won an 8-2 decision jand they cleaned up the set on {Sunday afternoon, here at |Lakeview Park, with a 9-6 ver- dict. Oshawa will now meet Belleville in the EOBA finals, lopening there on Saturday and playing back in Oshawa on |Sunday afternoon. Gary Allison, pitching for {Oshawa, held the Pee Wee Petes scoreless until the bot- tom of the 7th inning, when he \ran out of control, walking in }run came in on an_ infield }error. Dave Smith relieved Alli-| son at this point. Allison and Smith accounted for an even jdozen strikeouts and walked six batters, while giving up jonly five hits. Pee Wee Legionaaires Win EOBA Semi-Final Series first inning but lost it in the top| (Andy Boychuk CopsMarathon of the U.S. whose time was 2:27:54.2 set in Chicage in 1959. | Andy also holds the Canadian Open and the Canadian Native record in the 50 kilometer event. Carmona, who had been close behind Ellis when the Tor- |ontorian dropped out, was an | easy third in 2:27.48.2, also un- der Kelly's record. Nine of the 13. starters com- ipleted the race. Boychuk is 26 years old and is a men-vber of the Tor- onto Track Club, He was born in Orono, attended school in Oshawa, and is a graduate of the University of Waterloo. London Bowler But Gaels Grab Third Win OSHAWA ITALIA TRAILS... ... ONTARIO CUP FINALS Ballymena Wins First 4-2 TORONTO (Staff) - Oshawa Italia Soccer Club suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday night and it could prove a costly one, since it was a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Toronto Ballymena Club, in the first of the home-and- home, total - goals All-Ontario finals for the Ontario Cup, play- ed at Scarborough's Birchmount Stadium. Second game of the round will be played at Oshawa Kins- men Civic Memorial Stadium on Saturday night, when Italia must overcome that two-goal deficit, if they are to earn the right to represent Oshawa in Canada's soccer championship playdowns. will be scheduled on neutral ground, likely in Toronto. HOMESTERS TAKE LEAD A slippery pitch, which prov- ed particularly bothersome to goalie Angelo Bressan and the absence of Gustav Seide, Italia's fine play - making centre-half, were two of the deciding fac- tors. From the kickoff, it was ob- vious Italia were missing Seide's services and they at- tempted to rely on defensive tactics, their forte, in hope of drawing the speedier Ballymena team to them. For a while ,it looked as if the strategy might pay off but at about the 15 - minute mark, Ballymena's Jackie O'Neil broke through the defence, intercept- ed a pass that was doubtfully onside but while the Italia de- fence took time out to dispute the play, O'Neill beat Bressan, In the event of a tie, on the round, a sudden - death game! for the first goal. Bressan had a tough time keeping his feet on the newly- cut and watered pitch, a fact that was made all the more obvious 10 minutes later, when he again slipped, trying to cov- er a shot by John Anderson- and the score was '2-0. Oshawa Italia finally got on the score - sheet ,at the 33- minute mark, on a great move and finish by Mario Pedretti but five minutes later, O'Neill re - established the margin, with his second goal of the match, to make it 3-1. Italia players were guilty of leaving the centre wide-open on numerous occasions and the nip- py Ballymena front line. was quick to capitalize on this, with their superior aerial attack and fast passing. Only outstanding play by Oshawa's defense, Maurice Laidlaw in particular, saved the Oshawa team from being even further behind, when the teams left the field for in- termission. OSHAWA PRESSES Italia put on the pressure when the second half got un- derway and using a different style of play appeared to have overcome their nervousness and faults. They dominated play at this point and the ever effective Jon Pucic, spurted in from his right - wing spot to ram home a shot that made it 3-2 and put Italia very much in the running. For the next 25 minutes, Ital- ia had it almost their own way- almost, because they did every- thing but score. Late in the game, an Osh- awa lapse proved costly as Anderson scored his second of the night, to put Ballymena in front 4-2, a hotly disputed goal but one upheld by the officials. Italia continued to press but a strong and steady Ballymena defence thwarted their efforts, until the final whistle.
