6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, August 1, 1967 } 2) DID YOU actually think the Green Gaels were going to blow that game last night? For 45 minutes, Brampton Armstrong's had the Gaels on the ropes but Jim Bishop's crew just kept plugging away, Jed by scrappy little Phil 'Clayton. He's not the bigest player on the Gaels but no one tries harder. Armstrong's certainly injected some life into what many expected would just be a cakewalk for the Gaels. They stayed with the defending Canadian Jun- ior Champions most of the way sparked by goalkeeper Bob McNair, but in the final analysis they just didn't have that extra finish. WHILE EVERYONE likes a winner, let's take time out today to salute a loser. It's the Oshawa Legionnaires' midget "A minor" baseball. team, which competes in the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association. The club so far this season is winless, and a couple of the losses have been by wide mar- gins, but still the boys hang in there and give it everything they've got. TAKE THEIR most recent endeavors. They dropped a 10- inning decision to Belleville, 4-3. They were nipped 1-0 in nine innings by Oshawa ban- tams in an exhibition game that was originally scheduled 'for seven innings but went nine. Then they took Peter- #7 SPORTS BEAT By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor dropping a 3-2 decision and then they were edged 5-4 by Peterborough in 10 innings. They travel to Port Hope Thursday and Frankford Sat- urday before commencing lea- gue playoffs next week. The boys deserve a pat on the back for sticking with it, which proves they want to play ball. MOST OF the players can play midget ball next season, so there are bound to be bet- ter days ahead. But they could start winning now and every- one would forget that losing streak. Coaches Fred Harding and Percy Bradley certainly wouldn't mind a few wins. ALTHOUGH Minnesota North Stars have withdrawn their training camp from Osh- awa, city hockey fans will still have an opportunity to watch the club in pre-season games. They'll play three games here against other clubs in the ex- panded National Hockey Lea- gue, with the first game on Sept. 24 against Jack Kent Cooke and Red Kelly's Los Angeles Kings. TWO NIGHTS later, Bert Olmstead will bring the Cali- fornia Seals into Oshawa's Ci- vic Auditorium for an engage- ment with the North Stars, and in the third outing, Red Sulli- van's Pittsburgh Penguins will supply the opposition for Wren Blair's North Stars. The two teams treated Osh- awa lacrosse fans to the most entertaining game played at Ci- vic Auditorium this season. A crowd of 1,206 errupted when Charlie Marlowe scored the tying goal at the 16:37 mark of the final period beating Robert McNair in the Bramp- ton net. McNair was one of the big reasons for Brampton's dom- ination as he allowed Gaels only one goal in the second period and kept the opposition off the scoreboard for 17 minutes. Charlie Marlowe and Phil Clayton were instrumental in Gaels first playoff win this seas- and Ross Jones one. Mike Beamish also scored a single for Oshawa, his first. Beamish was playing in his second jun- ior 'A' game of the season, usually dressing with the junior "B" Brooklin club. WILFONG SCORES FIVE Dave Wilfong sparked the Oshawa scored two quick goals to open the first period but three by Wilfong helped Brampton to/a 6-5 lead at the end of the period. Wayne Atkinson and Dave Rudge scored two goals each and Dave Sterritt and Gord Keates scored singles to round out Brampton scoring. Crowd reaction during the fi- nal seven minutes of play was the loudest Gaels have heard all season. Clayton was a spark on by scoring four goals each with Jim Higgs scoring three Gaels Win Thriller the game but his key goal of the night came at the 13:49 mark of the final period. A Jones to Clayton goal at this point was the goal that seemed to jolt Gaels to life and provide the momentum that al- lowed them to score six of the final period of play as he scor- ed or assisted on five of the Brampton attack scoring five|jast six G of his team's 11 goals. jie trea gt heel Although Oshawa did not play well during most of the game they finished with a flurry, scoring the last five goals of the game. Gaels, a fast breaking club that, takes more shots than most teams in the league, were sty- miéd, by a five man box de- fence that slowed the game to the Brampton style and almost meant victory for the visitors. _ "We're going to work on play- ing a zone' said Gaels' coach Jim Bishop, after the game. on the Oshawa club throughout | Wood's Transport defeated Rundle's Garden Centre 13-5 in a re - scheduled fixture of a lrained - out game in the Civil [Service Softball League, last |night at Alexandra Park and lthe win moved Wood's into a consolidated grip of third place with 21 points, three ahead of Cross - Canada Paving and Rundle's, in losing, stayed Wood's Defeat Rundle's, 'Move Nearer Second Spot 3rd base but with two out, John Barker, singled, so did Dave Hardy and then Bob Moyce dou- bled to complete the rally.
