6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Scturduy, July 29, 1967 i ey POSSIBLY THE worst kept secret of the year was the fact that four members of the Can- adian national baseball team have played professional base- ball. Why they should have been allowed to play for Can- ada's team in the first place should be the first question asked of officials. Surely the rules must be clear on this point. It didn't take the Pan- American Games officials long to reach a decision once the subject was in the open. CANADIAN profession- al baseball players are a rar- ity, and as such they receive quite a bit of publicity. But what about the Cuban players, quite a few of whom probably play in the Cuban League. At one time this was a strong pro- fessional circuit, operating during the winter months, with many native major leaguers picking up a few extra dollars. Is the league still a profession- al one or has it become an am- ateur circuit now that the country has nothing to do with the United States? REPORTS HAVE Wren Blair heading into Winnipeg next week for the final week of the Pan-Am Games, but they are probably the farthest thing from Blair's mind. He's trying to build a National Hockey League contender out of no- thing and has his eyes on a quite a few members of Can- ada's national hockey team. Maybe Rev. David Bauer and Jackie McLeod will spirit the players out of the city for a week's holiday. OSHAWA GREEN Gaels close out their Ontario La- crosse Association junior "A" season tonight at Huntsville, eral times. Monday, it's To- ronto Richardsons men Stadium and it appears that light trouble has been re- paired. "\ SPORTS BEAT Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor perhaps the last meeting this year between the teams. There's quite a bit of rivalry between the teams but Gaels would probably be just as happy if the Tornadoes are bumped off in the first round. It's quite a grind with summer traffic into the north country. THINGS COULD be hopping in Brooklin tonight as the hometown Redmen entertain Peterborough Pepsis in an OLA senior "A" contest. Seems Brooklin goalkeeper Bob McCready and Pete's John Davis had quite a differ- ence of opinion following Davis' seventh goal Thursday night and when the shooting was over, the referees had call- ed the game and Redmen were pinned into their dress- ing room by more than 300 fans, The team'bus was backed into the arena and Redmen escaped to battle anew. THE UNPREDICTABLE Oshawa Legionnaires did it again last night at Kinsmen Stadium. Playing Belleville seniors, the junior Legion- naires came up with a gritty performance to capture a 5-4 verdict, scoring three runs in the eighth inning. In contrast to some of their more recent performances, Legionnaires were sharp, turning in sev- eral good fielding plays. They seem to play their best ball when involved in a running feud with the opposition. Last night, they had quite a time with the Belleville catcher, with trouble threatening sev- at Kins- SPORTSCOPE TRACK AND FIELD TODAY LACROSSE OLA Senior 'A' League -- |training session: at McLaugh- Peterborough' Don Byes |}, "Petes" vs Brooklin Redmen, at Brooklin Arena, 8:30 p.m. OLA Junior 'A' League -- Oshawa Green Gaels vs Huntsville Hawks, at Hunts- |; ville Arena, 8:30 p.m. SOFTBALL Lakeshore Minor League Playoffs -- Trenton vs Osh- awa Quality Fuels; ist game of 2 - out - of - 3 champion- ship finals; at North Oshawa Park, 8:00 p.m. | Ontario Cup Playoffs Kingston Flying Dutchmen vs Oshawa Italia; Ontario Cup sudden - death, semi - final game; at Kinsmen Civic Me- morial Stadium, at 7:00 p.m. Darlington Senior League-- 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. | SOFTBALL | Georgian Legion Track Club: Nightly in Collegiate Campus; from Oshawa City and District Assoc.: Oshawa Jay Cees vs Motor Hotel: at | North Oshawa Park, 8:00 p.m. and Markham Hawks vs Ajax Merchants; at Ajax; 8:00 p.m. Scarborough Junior Girls' League: Scarborough Village vs Oshawa; at North Oshawa Park, 8:30 p.m. Civil Service L day COMING DOWN THE BACKSTRETCH IN A RACE HELD AT THE OSHAWA FAIR Two double-heat winners were recorded last night in the har- ness racing program held at the Oshawa Fair.
