6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Pridey, July 21, 1967 SOCCER holds the sports spotlight around these paris tomorrow evening, although no doubt a lot of local lacrosse fans will take in that Senior 'A' tilt up in Brooklin, where Brampton Excelsiors will be visiting the Redmen. Green Gaels will have a contingent of rooters with them at Hast- ings where a visit from Osh- awa Juniors always brings out a special Saturday night crowd there. Here at Kinsmen Stadium, we find Oshawa Italia, fresh from their clean- cut win over Aurora in last week's Ontario Cup playoff game, ready to take on Sud- bury in the second round. Italia's supporters have it figured that Sudbury will pro- vide Oshawa with their tough- est opposition, on route to the actual Ontario Cup final. How- ever, the provincial final against the Western Ontario representatives is sure to produce keen competition. In the meantime, proceeding on the time-proven system of on e-at-a-time-is-good-fish- ing, Oshawa Italia's powerful eleven will be out to dispose of the Sudbury challenge here Saturday evening. OUR NEIGHBORS in Dar- lington Township are being treated to some outstanding entertainment these summer evenings, for all the good soccer in the area is by no means confined to the Kins- men Stadium pitch. With only three more weeks remaining in their season's schedule (six playing dates) after tomorrow night, they have a fair idea of which four teams will make the coveted playoff berths but certainly the final standing and favored first place in the race is very much in doubt. Tyrone, in fifth with 14 points, after upsetting league-leading Solina the other night, now has an excellent chance of catching a playoff berth, since Zion and Maple Grove are tied for third and fourth spots, with 17 points each while Courtice and Solina share the top rung, with 18 points each. Solina visits Courtice on Sat- urday evening. That game in Courtice, with sole possession of first place as the incentive, should be a hum-dinger. WEEKEND SPORTS activi- ties include Oshawa Legion- naires visiting Talbot Park on Sunday to meet Richardson while Whitby fans have a game at éach of their parks, Peterborough Pee Wees visit- SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell | Associate Sports Editor ing Whitby along with Cobourg Tykes, both on Sunday after- noon. Here at home, Lasco Steelers have a Senior 'B' Ja- crosse date with Wallace- burg's Red Devils and after losing here last night, the Steelers will. be out to win this one. Green Gaels close their schedule on Monday night, with Long Branch Mon- archs here and Jim Lutton's Legionnaires are at home to High Park, in a Leaside Jun- ior League fixture, at Kins- men Stadium. GREENWOOD RACEWAY has a special tomorrow night, a precedent in Canadian har- ness racing, with five 1967 Hambletonian "eligibles" going to the post in the same race, the fourth renewal of the $12,000 Greenwood Stakes. Never before in Canada have so many Hambletonian hope- fuls paraded before the har- ness horse folk at Greenwood or even at Garden City. It's a nine-horse field with Arm- bro Harold the likely favo- rite, having tasted defeat only once in five outings. Licking Speed, Angelo Pick Drum- mond R.C. and Nutmeg Han- over are listed as strong rivals, along with Hickory Blaze and Garma Alert. IT'S OLD HAT perhaps, but we'd like to repeat that Osh- awa softball fans are passing up some outstanding enter- tainment this summer, when they fail to take in the double- headers at Alexandra Park, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening. The Oshawa City and District Soft- ball Association teams are coming up with some spar- kling performances. Wednes- day night Dave Leaming came within the first batter of pitching a perfect game, no hits, walks nor errors. He faced only 27 batters. Last night, Ron Taylor faced only 29 as he pitched Gale Lumber to a 5-0 shutout over Mark- ham Hawks. Taylor chalked up 17 strikeouts and allowed only one hit -- in the first inning. Only other Markham batter to reach first base was on Taylor's own throwing error -- on a hurried-up throw on a good bunt. City and Dis- trict schedule will continue right through the GM holidays this year and they'll make a real effort to clean up their "City Championship" playoffs, early, rather than drag them out until after OASA playoffs, as of last year. by Tommy Burrows. Oshawa City and_ District Softball Association fans saw another brilliant pitching per- formance last night at Alexan- dra Park as Ron Taylor hurled a one-hitter, to blank Mark- ham Hawks, 5-0, for a Gale Lumber triumph. "Rich" Black scraped a single, as second batter in the first inning and that was the only "hit" Markham could claim, Taylor didn't issue a single walk either and the oniy other Markham batter to get on first base was Grant Leish- man in the fifth inning, when he bunted and Taylor was guilty of a high throw to first base -- just too high for Ralph O'Reilly, who covered the bag on the play. Taylor faced only 29 batters in his complete con- tro] and he claimed 17 strike- out victims, displaying excel- pitches. Cliff Lumley went the dis- tance for Markham, although replaced by a pinch-hitter in the ninth. He too pitched well Bay Ridges Nips Jaycees In an Oshawa City and Dis- trict Softball Association 'B' League gane last night in Pickering, Bay Ridges Shells nosed out the Oshawa Jaycee Juveniles 3-2, in an 11-inning 'overtime thriller. Three-straight hits by Warren Hall, Lew Jackson and Tony |Mousseau, with one out in the | ninth, were followed by a walk Ito Larry McKay, to force in the tying run and save Ridges. Warren Hall homered in the bottom of the 11th, to give Shells their win. The homesters got their first run in the opening frame on walk to Bob Baird and a field- er's choice play that was too late at the plate. Wilson, pitch- ing for Jaycees, did a fine job, allowing only five hits but three the 9th and cost him his win. He had 10 strikeouts. Bay Ridges and gave up eight Hudgin, Koloneski and Casselman all hit safely in suc- cession in the fourth inning, for Jaycees but they got only one run out of it. Kingside earned the honor last night at Cowan's Park |when they defeated Storie Park Bantams 7-4, in the third and deciding game of their playoff series. Kingside got to Ted Taylor, Storie pitcher, for four runs on five hits, in the very first in- ining. Dale Tullock opened with ja single, Eric Howard doubled, \Bill Hedger singled and Wayne \Chappell completed the rally with his homer. John Wright's single made it five hits in a row but he was left stranded. Chappell got his second homer to launch a three-run rally for the winners, in the sixth inning. Wright followed with a singie and with one out, Jim Grant | homered, to make it 7-2. Kiwanis Bantam League schedule will resume after GM holidays, with all teams eligible for the 'City Championship" playdowns in the Bantam League. Kingside expects to open their OASA playoffs about August 12 or 15. 138 Runs In Four Tilts Runs were plentiful in Osh- awa Neighborhoods Association softball play Thursday, with teams scoring 138 runs in four ames. In tyke play, Eastview trim- med Fernhill 15-10 and Con- naught Park whipped North Oshawa 27-13. In squirt action, Eastview trounced Kingside 36-2 and Con- naught nipped North Oshawa 18-17. Terry Mackness had a home| run, double and single for East- view tykes and Tom Shetler homered. Winning pitcher Brad Gales Blank Markham second hit of the game, was again forced by Knight, then Taylor was safe on an infield error, so was Mapes and Knight scored on the second bobble. TV TOWERS TOP GEORGIANS Mister TV Towers whipped Georgian Motor Hotel 14-5 in a free-swinging opener of the night's doubleheader. Al Cook started for Geor- gians and later gave way to Jim Starkey while Bob Talbot went the distance for TV Towers. The winners caught Cook "cold" in the first inning and bunched five hits, along with a walk and two errors for five runs, C. Johnston's triple and a double by Bob Blair being the big blows. TV Towers broke out again in the fourth, for three more runs, Larry Michael's double being the big hit in this rally. The winners added a_half- dozen runs in the eighth in- ning, to turn a respectable #5 score into a 14-5 rout. A. Cook faltered and went wild and Starkey had trouble finding his bearings when he took over, so the result was three walks, four hits, includ- ing Michael's triple--for six more runs. J, Cook's walk, single by Bob McKay, doubles by Mike Mothersill and Art Cochrane, gave Georgians three runs in the third. Talbot held them in contro! after that, all the way, except for the seventh inning, when Starkey's triple opened a four-hit barrage that netted their last two runs, McKay and Mothersill were the only two Georgians to get two hits. Morris Shows Way In Wings' Victory Jim Morris scored seven goals as Red Wings trimmed Keeler had 16 strikeouts. M.
