Dolak, 43, of 220 Gibb St., had pleaded guilty to charges of driving under sus- pension and impaired driving. In examining Dolak's record Magistrate Dodds noted that Dolak had a very long record of offences involving liquor. He sentenced Dolak to three months on each of the two charges. They are to be served concurrently. Magistrate Dodds decided to recommend that Dolak serve his sentence at the Alex Brown Clinic in Mimico where he will receive treatment for alcohol- ism. His car was impounded for a period of three months. $5,000 BAIL Bail was set at $5,000 for Lloyd Pilkey, 82 Church St., who has been charged with rob- bery with violence. Pilkey has been charged with robbing a pedestrian at knifepoint. Bail was to be in the form of cash or property. $200 FINE An Oshawa trucker was con- victed of impaired driving and fined $200 and costs or 20 days. When Myra Stewart, who was celebrating her birth-' day, answered the door, a struggle developed in which Mrs. Stewart received a cut ankle and Mr. Grabowski had the shirt torn off his back. Anguilla Fights For Secession ANGUILLA (Reuters) -- Vol- unteers armed with rifles, pis- tols, hoes and rakes manned beaches against possible inva- sion today as Anguillans voted in an independence referendum which could lead to creation of one of the world's smallest states. The referendum was virtually certain to result in an over- whelming vote in favor of se- cession from the newly-created Caribbean state of St. Kitts-Ne- vis-Anguilla. It climaxed a rebellion begun May 30 when Anguillans forced the state police force, consisting of an inspector and 12 men, off the island, seized the police armory and ran up the Union Jack in place of the state's blue, green and yellow flag. Anguillans claimed that Pre- mier Robert Bradshaw's gov- ernment, based on the "mother island" of St. Kitts, 69 miles away, denied them local auton- omy and deliberately kept them ata near subsistence level. FEAR REPRISALS As 2,000 registered electors voted today, Anguillans feared Bradshaw would launch an in- vasion to regain control of the island with the aid of rumored large - scale arms purchases from the United States. - The Vatican is. the world's smallest state with a total land area of 108 acres and a popula- tion of 1,000. Anguilla, with its 35 square tiles, also is a giant when com- pared to Monaco the next small- est, which has a land area of only half a square mile. But Monaco's population of 22,500 is almost four times that of An- guilla's. Anguilla has few assets apart from a salt factory, fishing and remittances from about 4,000 Anguillians who work overseas --many in the nearby Virgin Is- lands and in the British town of Slough. SNAILS EAT MAIL NEWTON FERRERS, Enz- land (CP)--People have been getting tattered letters marked "Damaged by snails in the let- ter box" from this Devon com- munity. Mail boxes in part of Devon are set in farm walls and the snails crawl up the damp brickwork and inside to get at the mail. "Snails ap- parently like the taste of the ink," a post-office spokesman explained. But...you say, "No thanks, there is nothing like a good home-baked pie." , We agree...they're great."
