6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, July 8, 1967 OSHAWA LEGIONNAIRES entertain Kingston Frontenacs at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium Sunday afternoon at two o'clock in what promises to be a good baseball game. It's an Eastern Ontario Base- ball Association senior con- test, and if the first meeting of the season between the teams is any indication, vase- ball fans shouldn't miss this one. In that first meeting, Kingston scored a 4-2 victory. THIS IS the first senior game at the ball park in several seasons, although one was scheduled earlier. Legion- naires actually are juniors competing in a senior circuit, but their performance to date has been good for the senior circuit. They walked into Little Britain on Wednesday and blanked the Pirates 3-0 on the strong pitching of Mur- ray Godfrey, who has yet to taste defeat this season. COMPETING IN the tough Leaside Junior League keeps Legionnaires sharp. This league certainly has to rank one-two with junior leagues in Canada, and has long been a grooming ground for Ontario boys wishing to take a fling at professional ball south of the border. Oshawa's John Ryan competed in this league and is a former batting champion. SPEAKING OF Ryan, he had quite an evening Thurs- day as Toronto Maple Leafs split an International League doubleheader. The third base- man, who incidentally is Tor- onto's top hitter, collected four hits in the two games and played a prominent part in all Leafs' scoring. He's been in and out of the lineup with an injury but the way the club's going right now, manager Eddie Kasko can't afford to give him a rest. LEAFS RETURN home to- night for a six-day stand, with Kasko hoping to right the sinking ship. Leafs haven't been too sharp lately, but the talent is there and they might well be back challenging for the lead soon. This club won SPORTS BEAT By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor 15 out of 19 during May and early June. Hitting has been a serious problem, with the club getting good pitching al- most every time out. OSHAWA CANADIAN Legion, Branch 43, Minor Baseball Association president Ted McComb reports that Frank McCallum, a director of the Toronto baseball club, and a city controller, has ac- cepted an honorary presi- dent's roll in the association. Long a booster of baseball in these parts, McCallum is one of a group of about five men who have been keeping pro- fessional baseball alive in Toronto. And you can imagine the fun he must have when he asks the Toronto people when they're going to add a Toronto boy to the club. After all, Oshawa has done its part. THIS IS a weekend of out- standing sports attractions, and Kinsmen Stadium is the site for most. Tomorrow eve- ning, Oshawa and District Soccer Association all - stars will meet the Ontario Selects, a team with quite a few of Canada's national soccer team on its roster. Eight members of the visiting side have been selected to play with the Can- adian team in the Pan-Ameri- can Games at Winnipeg later this month, and another is ineligible because he hasn't lived in Canada long enough, although he has competed for Britain in the Olympic Games. CHICAGO WHITE Sox pro- vided themselves with a little breathing room atop the American League last night with an exciting 2-1 victory over Minnesota Twins. The Twins have been hot lately but the Go-Go White Sox cooled them off somewhat. It's a four-game series and it could eventually determine the out- come in the pennant race. Detroit Tigers .are hanging tough, also, and it's still a hot race, something the American League doesn't usually have. Over in the National League, the mad scramble continues, with seven clubs still in con- tention. Jewellers Defeat Legionnaire Squad when lead-off batter Geoff Weiss doubled to left. He scored on Doug Fleming's single to centre and Booth followed with another single, moving Flen-ing to third, from where he scored on Duffy Lewis' sacrifice fly to centre. Ron Linklater's infield single and a pair of errors allowed Jewellers to score another run in the second. Legionnaires fought back in the third, Bill Ryan led off with a home run to left and they added another run on two errors and a single by Ken Toffan, but a quick return from the outfield nailed the tying run at third base. Jewellers went about wrap- ping up the win in the fifth when Lockett. walked the first two batters and Lewis doubled them home. With two out, John Marks singled Lewis to third and the pair ended scoring for the inning by executing a double steal, Lewis stealing home. Jewellers added another pair of runs in the sixth off reliever Gary Carroll, with Lewis doub- ling home both runs. Successive singles by Ron Inche, Ryan and Carroll loaded the bases for Oshawa in the seventh and Pat Watters' singled one run home, Another scored on an infield out as Booth took over pitching duties. Legionnaires loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and an infield hit by Tony Jones but Booth worked his way out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts and an infield out.
