6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, July 7, 1967 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor BOB ECCLES, the classy pitcher from Galt, is well- known to. Oshawa _ softball fans, 'especially those who make it a point every summer to be on hand for the big All- Ontario Junior Softball Tour- nament, 'here at Alexandra Park. It's one of the major softball tournaments of all listed on the OASA summer calendar and every year pro- duces new thrills and excite- ment, as well as top-notch competition, for Oshawa spec- tators. We wouldn't have got around to mentioning this year's tournament quite so early, except that the name of Bob Eccles in a recent soft- ball feat, reminded us that he has been at the Oshawa tour- nament for the past four or five years. The big Junior Softball Tournament this year is being held one week from tomorrow, at Alexandra Park, of course, with four or five games going all at. the same time throughout the afternoon, until they get weeded down to the big final game under the floodlights at night. CITY AND DISTRICT offi- cials have already received 15 entries for their monster event and at least 16 are ex- pected to face the barrier. Coming to do battle against Oshawa's own Scugog Clean- ers, perennial favorites with the local fans, will be David- son Motors of Scarborough, Galt Steelers, the strong Smithville team, and other centres to be represented in- clude Tavistock, Chatham, Peterborough, Bay Ridges, Richmond Hill, Burlington, Grimsby, North York and Binbrook, along with Oshawa People's and Oshawa Jaycees Juveniles. Davidson's defeated Scugog Cleaners 1-0 in their tournament battle at Owen Sound last weekend. GALT SLEES defeated Kitchener in an Inter-City Softball League game last week by a score of 1-0. That in itself doesn't sound like anything very unusual but\we believe that game made soft- ball history for the OASA and the longest game of softball ever played. It lasted 26 innings for all of. Canada, as finally got the orphan tally of the contest. En route, Martin the Kitch- ener hurler, claimed 49 strike- outs while Bob Eccles struck out no less than 57 batters. Quite a chore for one night-- a long night -- the game ended at 12:50 a.m. -- lasting a total of four hours and 50 minutes, before Galt REMINDER to local soccer fans. The Eastern Canada All- Stars, including some of the top soccer stars of that part of the country, who have been named to play for Canada at the next Olympic Games, are playing the Oshawa and Dis- trict Soccer Association All- Stars, here'at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium on Sun- day night. The game is called for seven o'clock and should be one of the finest exhibitions of soccer seen around these parts for many a day. Coach Frank Malawy has 24 local 'stars' from which to select his starting team and all have been training and practising diligently for this big game. The Oshawa All-Stars are de- termined to show those who did the picking, that all the best soccer players in Eastern Canada do not come from outside The Motor City. TWO MORE excellent soft- ball games were played last night at Alexandra Park in one of those Oshawa City and District "doubleheaders." They have them every Tues- day and Thursday and on Wednesday nights there is always one game, sometimes two. Scugog Cleaners scored four runs in the first inning but after that they had a real battle on their hands, with Ajax Merchants, the final score being 5-0. It was Dave | Leaming's second shutout of | the week. Young Phil Solomon hit the first pitch of the game over the left-field fence for a homer, to get the Oshawa fans excited real early. {mile race while Paul Dekking 'Dudley Stars In Dixie's Win | (Over Brooklin Ron Dudley scored six goals as Dixie defeated Brooklin 12-5 in Ontario Lacrosse Association \Junior "'B" play Thursday.
