6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, June 27, 1967 #~\" SPORTS BEAT ; By Eric Wesslby Gales Blank | |Brooklin 2-0 | Oshawa Gale Lumber took! advantage of an error, then| # put four hits together to down|# 'Goal-Crazy Gaels 'Trounce Brampton i ll py | IT WAS a hectic eveaing at Kinsmen Stadium Monday 'with Oshawa Legionnaires and Toronto High Park Braves "meeting in a Leaside Junior *Baseball League game. While 'it might not be major league 'calibre, the competition is just -as keen in this league. It's a circuit that has spawned sev- eral players who have cam- paigned in the' United States, including Oshawa's John Ryan, now with Toronto Maple Leafs of the Inter- national League. BUSIEST FELLOWS last «night were the umpires, Doug Simpson and Doug Finney. 'Before the game was over, 'they had bounced two players 'and the Toronto coach from :the game, although all left *amiably enough. Legionnaires 'scored their third straight win 'over High Park to solidify their third place position in *the league. High Park downed Toronto Richardsons 1-0 Sun- *day. Now, if Legionnaires can sonly learn how to _ handle *Richardsons, it will be a good srace for first place among the 'three teams. OSHAWA GREEN Gaels 'were on the march again at 'Civic Auditorium Monday, as 'they humbled Brampton Arm- istrongs 19-2. Gaylord Powless 'increased his junior league :point-scoring lead while Ross 'Jones broke out of a slump to climb back into the fight for second spot with Long Branch's Bruce Todman. Gaels meet Toronto Marlboros tonight at North York Arena. OSHAWA'S BANTAM base- ball team, sponsored by Osh- awa Canadian Legion, Branch 43, got an 'insight into small town living during the past weekend as they travelled to Chesley to compete in the annual Chesley Rotary Ban- tam Baseball Tournament. Rained out Saturday morning, the Oshawa team got to play Times Sports Editor in the afternoon, thanks to the efforts of the people of Ches- ley in getting their ball dia- monds in shape, despite the rain. THE PLAYERS were bil- Jeted in various homes for their stay in Chesley and such will be the case again this coming. weekend when they return for the tournament semi - final against Dundas. Chesley, located 35 miles southwest of Owen Sound, was a busy spot, with 18 teams in the tournament. Tournament director Jack Flewelling said that 150 boys were billeted overnight, quite an accom- plishment for a small town. CHESLEY HAS _ two ball diamonds, both in excellent shape. Oshawa has quite a few diamonds on the other hand, but many aren't in very good shape. The diamond at Kinsmen Stadium and two at Alexandra Park get. preferen- tial treatment, but on the whole, the parks in the city are neglected, both for base- ball and softball. All diamonds in the city are in dire need of fill at various spots. If you don't think so, drop around to any one following a rain storm Last Thursday, Alexandra Park at. the north end re- sembled a beach in_ the Kawarthas.' Small children were using a section of the race track as a wading pool. DON'T FORGET three out- standing attractions in Osh- awa this week. Tomorrow night, at Alexandra Park, Oshawa City and District Soft- ball League all-stars will play the touring California Cuties in an exhibition softball game ... Thursday night, at Civic Auditorium, Green Gaels will entertain the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior "A" all- stars... The Ontario Lacrosse Asso- ciation junior "A" game at Civic Auditorium was _high- lighted by roughhouse tactics, and a six-goal performance by Gaylord Powless, who has boosted his points to 89 in 13 games. Ross Jones was also potent last night as he scored five Q goals, including two in the last minute, of play. Other Oshawa scorers were Phil Clayton and naj five, plus a game miscon- duct. The visitors further antagon- ized Oshawa minutes later, but the home team took its re- venge in goals. Powless scored at 18.43; Jones at 19.01, Lloyd at 19.35, Powless again at 19.42 'and, finally, Jones again at 19.53. Gaels kept Brampton off the scoreboard until the 14.19 mark of the second period, when Keats scored on a breakaway and did not allow another goal until the 2.36 mark of the final Mike Lewis, two goals each, Larry Lloyd, Don Stinton, Char- lie Marlowe, and John Clayton. Brampton goals were scored by Gord Keates and Brian Green. Bran-pton's Danny Morenz took a run at goalie Merv Mar- shall late in the third period. Marshall, who was playing the part of a third defenceman (without the ball) near mid- floor, ended up on the seat of his pants. This action caused Oshawa's Joe Krasnaj to go after Morenz. Morenz got seven minutes in penalties and Kras- years as one of the finest U.S. softball teams on tour. This is their first visit to Oshawa and the game at Alexandra Park on Wed- nesday is another of this Centennial Year attractions. By CLIFF GORDON Peterborough Don Bye Petes scored three unanswered goals in overtime Monday night to down Brooklin Redmen 13-10 in an Ontario Lacrosse Peterborough. The win moves the Petes four points ahead of the second place Redmen, with Brooklin having one game in hand. Peterborough, who got off to a flying start, enjoyed a 4-1 lead at one stage of the open- ing period and led 5-3 at the end of the initial stanza. It was 8-6 for the Petes at the end of the second, with Brooklin coming on strong in the third to tie the count at 10-10 at 18:12 of the third period, as Terry Davis scored his fourth goal of the jnight. of scoring the clincher with seven seconds to go, as they had a three-on-one break with Elmer Tran and Terry Davis right in, followed by John Dale.
