The Pope met in secret con- sistory with 35 members of the Sacred College of Cardinals for them to confirm his 27 nomi- nees to their ranks, The meet- ing lasted 23 minutes, and the confirmation was automatic. Wednesday, at a semi-public consistory, the Pope will pre- sent the red biretta--the three- ridged pillbox hat--to 24 of the new cardinals. Thursday, they will join him in celebrating mass in St. Peter's Square, a public ceremony being held out- doors for the first time so that more people may attend. The other three new cardinals are the papal nuncios, or am- passadors, to Spain, Portugal and Italy. Because of the church's special position in those countries and their con- cordats with the Vatican, the three nuncios will get their red hats from the chiefs of state.
