Underhill, chairman of the laws study committee of the National Council of Women, Tuesday told delegates to the eouncil's annual convention that a Senate bill dealing with hate literature will be made part of the group's study program for| the coming year. ;The member organizations | would discuss the contents of} the bill with their local mem- bers of Parliament and then submit their findings to a joint parliamentary committee s00n| to be appointed to study the | projected law. The council, currently faced with a problem of trying to in- terest younger women in the activities of member organiza- tions, gave reports to the dele- gates on a "self examination" project they have undertaken in an effort to remedy the situa- tion. EXTENSIVE PROGRAMS The project included leader- ship and citizenship programs from coast to coast in Canada and an extensive study of the NCW's administration from the municipal to the national level. » Earlier Tuesday, Mrs. P. Pointe, a Canadian Indian from 'Nanaimo, B.C., asked the coun- cil to adopt a resolution which 4vould recommend that the fed- eral government treat Indian ban elections in the same man- ner as federal elections. -. Women on her reserve, said Mrs.. Pointe, had the oppor- tunity to mingle with women of the white community through membership on the Nanaimo council, something she said is still a rarity in Canada. The Indian band elections res- lution was adopted by the dele- gates along with another recom- mending that the federal ernment include family Ming in its external aid pro- gram. Consumer Groups 'Decide To Unite _. MONTREAL (CP)--The presi- fents of 12 Canadian Women's consumer groups representing ¥,500 members met in Montreal Tuesday and voted to unite into a "'non - profit, non - sectarian and non - political" organiza- tion called the Canadian Con- sumers' Protest Association. The new constitution rejected the advice of politicians--most recently Laurier Lapierre, NDP candidate in Lachine-- that the association should be prepared to commit itself in a block vote to one political Party. Mr. Lapierre, who addressed the women with Dr. William Howe, NDP MP for Hamilton South, said he does not like groups "who do not take a po- Iitical stand" since they often become preoccupied with short- term objectives--"stupid little lobbying groups trying to man- {pulate things for their own ends." _ Davis Will Not Call McMaster Inquiry TORONTO (CP) -- Education Minister William Davis said Tuesday he does not plan to call on an inquiry into allegations of ®@ power struggle within the po- litical science department. of McMaster University in Hamil- ton. Mr. Davis told the legislature "such action would constitute in- terference with the university's autonomy. _.. Resignation of a_ professor Monday left the department with pniy four of its nine members prepared to return to lectures ,in_Septem-ber. Mr. Davis, replying to a ques- tion from Opposition Leader Robert Nixon, said he had not checked all the facts in the case "but understood internal opera- tions of the university and the matter of academic freedom were involved.
