10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, June 5, 1967 'Dear Ann Landers: I suppose I.should be happy my husband 4g not a slob, but I'm beginning to think the other extreme is just as bad. Here is a sample of what goes on in our house before we leave for an evening, and it is driving me crazy. He says, "Do I look 0.K.?" I say, "Yes. You look fine, dear."" He says, "Is this tie right with this shirt?" I say, "Honey, your tie is perfect." He says, "Are you sure my pants aren't too long?" I say, "No, dear, your pants are just right." He says, "Did I get a haircut this time or did e barber take too much off oer the ears?" I say, 'Your Haircut is beautiful, dear." 'Just as we get out the door he'll say, "Is this jacket right with these trousers or should I go back and put on my herring- bone?" I say, "'Your jacket is perfect, dear." When we get in the car he says, "'Do you think }F should have put on my brown shoes?" I say, "These shoes are fine, dear." 'Then when I ask, "How do you think I look tonight?" he answers, "'Why must you al- Ways fish for compliments? I'm getting awfully tired build- ing you up." What can I do with a guy like this?--M.I. Dear M.1.: Nothing, so don't try. A man who is so unsure 6f himself is not going to give his wife much bolstering. So just continue to prop him up and feed his vanity because he gure does need it, Lady. * Dear Ann Landers: If you do ANN LANDERS Insecure Husband Depends On Wife put the spotlight on mental illness deserves a medal. I was deeply moved by the letter from the young woman whose mother - in-law accused her of using her "nerves" as an excuse to avoid responsibil- ity. I'm an older woman who must work to support myself. I am the victim of "nerves" or mental illness--or I am just plain nuts, whatever anybody wants to call it. My children think I am fak- ing and feeling sorry for my- self. They are tired of me, but a|they are not half as tired as I am--of myself. At times I wish I could just die and get out of their way, but I keep hoping tomorrow will be better. Mental illness is impossible to describe to a person who has good mental health. It's like trying to describe hell. It's un- real. It's a million miles from nowhere. It has no beginning and no end. Please tell your readers who can live reasonably normal lives, free of horrible depres- sions and agonizing fears, that they should thank God for every} : day. Many a child who is finicky over food and refuses to eat nutritious foods was an eating problem earlier, say, when only 3 or 4. He may grow up avoid- ing certain essential foods. Not choosing to eat of a bal- anced diet, the youngster often makes mealtime unpleasant for the whole family. Think of all the unhappy scenes around the family table over getting a child there to eat. Most mothers know what a well-balanced meal for the fam- ily is. She may prepare the meal well. But when a child re- Form Poor Food Habits preparing Most eating problems of chil-}which she can include in dis- about relate to babies and chil-|been refusing. With several finicky eat- ers in the family there then may be more and more confus- ing activities. A mother, in desperation over the youngster, may serve on his heaping plate the foods . she thinks he should eat and tell him he can't leave the table till he has a clean plate. So this child may still be sitting at the table for 20 minutes or an hour -- the rest of the family have eft. True a clean plate may be a desirable objective, but to re- to-taste an unfamiliar food, you might persuade him to take merely a tiny taste, though a) teaspoonful might seem hope: | less to him. Let us always assume the child does the eating and eats when he is hungry. Beginning in his early years at the dinner table, aim to get him hungry. Instead of trying to force cer- tain foods into him, find ways to keep away from him certain other foods he eats excessively. Let him always choose but limit his choices, sometimes between what is offered and nothing. Whatever the age of the child or children set as your general aim that mealtime is going to a happy time, and that eating will be enjoyable. Resolve to avoid nagging about eating. Say nothing about it at all. Be sure both parents aim to set a good example with no food dislikes. Certainly any parent can learn to eat practically any foods if he disciplines himself or herself to do so. fuses to eat of all or any of the food she prepares for the fam- ily, she and other persons there may be annoyed. Usually, the mother keeps commanding the youngster who shies away from certain foods to eat them or more of them, expecting him to obey as if she had told him to wash his hands before coming to the table. A mother may often engage in a whining m about table till he has eaten all the food on it rarely works well.
