6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, June 2, 1967 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor GREEN GAELS struck for another win last night, up in Long Branch, to increase their margin as the OLA Junior 'A' league-leaders and here at home, Oshawa's new Senior 'B' lacrosse team made their debut a winning one. "IKE" HILDEBRAND'S ap- 'pointment to the post of coach of Oshawa Generals has been 'greeted with friendly and sen- timental enthusiasm by the hockey. fans here. Having played with the Generals for two seasons, 1945-46-47 and jater marrying an Oshawa girl, Helen Alpin, he has con- siderable "roots" in this city. Incidentally, they have four children, Jay the elder is 19 and their most recent arrival is seven - months - old Heidi. Naturally, memories are a little short, when one recalls all the great stars who wore the Oshawa Generals livery, but there's nothing like a telephone conversation with the real source, to clear up a few facts. » TORONTO MARLIES, then in Senior OHA ranks, were the next to get the services pf the classy right-winger, after leaving the Generals and that season, centred by Johnny McCormack, "Ike" was the league's top scorer. Then he went to Los Angeles, for a year, then Kansas City for a year and here he was the league's top scorer again. That business of scoring goals was a Hildebrand trademark. He didn't do that in NHL company, mind you, but he had a very creditable pro career in the top ranks, with New York Rangers and then with Chicago Black Hawks. He was playing for Chicago the night he suffered a brok- en leg, in Maple Leaf Gar- dens. The following season the injury gave him trouble and he went to Montreal Royals and then from there back to Cleveland Barons. "Tke" had gone from Kansas City to Cleveland in 1950-51 and led the American League in. goal scoring. There two years, he also won The Cal- der Cup, prior to moving up to Rangers in 1953. "HIS RETURN to amateur ranks was negotiated by the late Jim Hendy of Cleveland Barons and then "Ike" went to Pembroke. From there he moved into Belleville as play- ing coach of the famed 'Mc: Farlands" and during his three-year stint there, they won the Allan Cup in 1958 in that great final, which saw Kelowna Packers win the first three games then Belle- ville came back to take the next four. In 1959, McFar- lands won the World Cham- pionship for Canada, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Leaving Belleville 'in 1960, "Ike" quit the game as a player but moved to Peter- borough, to coach the Junior 'B' team there.and do a bit of refereeing. He moved to Lon- don then and coached the Junior 'B' team there very successfully, especially in 1963-64-65, before being re- placed by "Turk" Broda when London moved into Jun- jor 'A' ranks. "IKE" HIMSELF considers he was a greater lacrosse star than hockey player--but of course, there's no recog- nized -- professional status there, like the NHL level. He made history in lacrosse how- ever, in his native British Columbia. At the age of 15 he joined the famous New West- minster Salmonbellies and they won the Mann Cup that season, just after 'Ike' had turned 16 -- youngest player .to ever win a Memorial Cup medal. When only 17, again in the Mann Cup finals, he won the Mike Kelly Award (Mann Cup outstanding star) and he set a record of seven goals in the series, which still stands. In all, he played in eleven Mann Cup finals (another record) and they won the trophy five times. In all he 18 seasons in sen- jor l&trosse, including one with Mimico and seven sea- sons in Peterborough, where he was playing-coach for four of these and then won the Mann Cup four times in the seven years. Oh yes. -- oe's also quite a golfer and curler. His rink won the club title last winter, in London. He and Helen plan on joining Oshawa Golf Club here, to continue their golf and curl- ing activity. We suspect that for "Ike" -- it will be a case of Sundays only! SPORTSCOPE |Juniors Trim Kendal 9-1 Kendal a 9-1 defeat in an East- ern Ontario Baseball Associa- tion junior game at Lakeview Legionnaires' third straight league win, John Fair, who relieved start- ing pitcher Bob Lockett in the second inning when the latter developed a sore arm, picked up the pitching decision, hold- ing Kendal hitless until two were out in the seventh. First hit off Fair was a double by Ron Moore and he scored when Wayne Hogg singled to centre and Wayne Cookson bobbled the ball. Kendal had a hit in the first inning off Lockett, a single by Tom Warden, and one in the second, by Grant Moore. Fair struck out nine batters and walked only one batter. Oshawa collected only five hits in the seven-inning game, scoring four runs in the fifth on only one hit. Oshawa hitters were Wayne Cookson, Pat Watters, Ron Inche, Norm Bjorndahl and Tony Jones. Legionnaires struck for their first three runs in the third in- ning. Fair was safe on an out- field error, moved to second on a sacrifice fly and scored on Watters' single to left. Inche's single moved Watters to third, with Inche taking sec- ond on the throw-in to the in- field, and both scored on Bjorn- dahl's single to centre. Legionnaires picked up four runs in the fifth on five walks and Cookson's single, and com- pleted scoring in the sixth on another five walks. The game progressed amiably through the first period, but fights broke out in the second and third periods. Lotton drew a five-minute fighting penalty along with North Star's Brainard at the 16.06 mark of the second period, then Davenport picked up a minor penalty when he went against Owen Sound's Keith Goodfellow two minutes later, Goodfellow drawing a minor. North Star goalie, Bob Gro- vier got into the act in the third period in a brief set-to with Ed Aru, but Ed Busey quickly took over the cause of North Stars, collecting a two- minute high sticking penalty and a five-minute fighting pen- alty.
