South got to three hearts on the bidding shown and West led a spade, East winning the jack |with the ace. East returned a diamond and South took it with the ace and led a spade towards the queen. West went up with the king and returned a low diamond, the queen forcing the king. De- clarer then led a heart to the jack and discarded the ten of the queen of at which point this be- came the position: 6-- Declarer now led the nine of clubs to the queen and West made the first of a remarkable series of plays by following with the deuce. South continued with a club and, when West again followed low, finessed the ten, since he thought East had the ace and hoped West had the jack. But East won with the jack and made the excellent co-oper- ative return of a trump, which South won in his hand with the ten. Declarer then led a club to the lone king, and West for the third successive time followed low East ruffed and again return- ed a trump, and, since declarer still had to lose a club, he wound up going down one. West finally got around to scoring the ace of clubs at trick num- ber thirteen. Scene of first miracle Dear Dr. Molner: My boy friend went swimming three years ago and developed seri- ous ear trouble. His doctor said he had a perforated ear drum, and gave him some pills which he said might or might not stop the running from his ear. He also told him an operation could be performed but might damage his hearing. He used the pills for a while but noted no change and dis- continued using them. He has stopped going to the doctor, and just puts cotton in his ear to absorb the running. He will soon be 21 and many opportunities are closed to him. He cannot enlist in any of the armed services and cannot be a policeman as he wants to be. Is there anything that will help ea hearing aid?--Miss G Your reference to a hearing aid indicates that his hearing already is affected, but he is running a greater risk than that. The running ear indicates that a chronic infection is pres- ent. There is no reason to ex- pect it to get better by itself. It may get worse, and this sort of infection can leave a person totally deaf. There is even the risk of the infection spreading and becoming extremely dan- gerous. I would guess that the doctor soft-pedaled the idea of an oper- ation three years ago because he wanted to see whether the infection could first be con- trolled medically. That's doubt- then. But now, after the infection has persisted for three years, it's an entirely different matter. I'd send the young man off to ° less what I would have done--} By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD an ear specialist without delay. Immediate and thorough care now, perhaps an operation, may save his hearing and may save him from worse troubles, Dear Dr. Molner: What is the purpose of cutting the vagus nerve in a case of a duodenal ulcer, to eliminate pain, or to 'eng acid in the stomach?-- Neither, directly. The purpose is to reduce the excessive activ- ity of the stomach and give the ulcer a chance to heal. Dear Dr. Molner: Does a per- son 70 or older get much bene- fit from dry milk?--C. G. I think you mean powdered milk, which is then mixed with water. It has essentially the Same values as the original milk from which the powder was made. Both the protein and calcium content are of value at any age--and it's my opinion that a good many older people can trace some of their physi- cal ailments to lack of calcium. One glass of milk a day can be very useful to older folks-- more if they like it. Dear Dr. Molner: I offered to write to you for the answer to an unusual question that came up. Can a person innocently acquire lice or "'crabs" in the pubic area? Does there have to be sexual contact or can they be picked up in other ways?-- Mrs. F. McC. Crab lice are small insects. While sexual contact is obvi- ously one means of transmit- |ting them, they can be acquired innocently, just as any parasite may be unwittingly picked up. Public toilet seats can be offenders, insect} tics professor Dr. Jean + Paul Vinay. Unlike a tape recorder, EVA reads various complex factors that go into any speech sound rather than hearing the sound and playing it back. Dr. Vinay, who came to the University of Victoria last year after 15 years as head of the University of Montreal's linguis- tics department, says speech synthesizers permit "a new and spectacular approach to the sci- ence of language." "Until about 1950, it was pos- sible only to analyse speech. by the trained ear, or with the help of recording machines. Now the picture is completely altered. "We now can generate speech * by feeding into the machine severe! 'marameters (factors) such as pitch, intensity, intona- tion contours and-the elements making up vowel or consonant structure. "Each of these factors may be modified at will, enabling researchers to conduct studies on one aspect of language with non-pertinent features re- moved."
