The markets have been in a slump for four consecutive weeks | and the prospects for an break 's dim. The New York Stock Ex- change, the traditional North American pace - setter, was rocked this week as tension in- creased in the Middle East. The effect was felt on Cana- dian exchanges and Wednesday the Toronto exchange suffered its sharpest daily decline of 1967 when the industrial index slid 2.03 points. RECOVER SOME LOSS The markets recovered part of the loss Thursday put ana- lysts attributed this to technical factors resulting from an over- sold condition. Also influencing investors is the fact that earnings appear to be advancing more slowly than in 1966. At Toronto, the industrial in- dex declined 2.09 to 164 and vol- ume for the four-day week was only 9,113,000 shares compared with 13,116,000 shares last week. At Montreal, the index dropped 1.42 to 162.42 and volume fell to 25,|3,634,000 shares compared with 4,481,000 last week. Analysts said unless there is a sharp increase in trading fig- ures there is little chance of any substained rally. The Toronto exchange has been plagued by a sharp decline in trading and as of May 16 total industrial volume had tum- bled to 45,689,000 shares com- pared with 94,438,000 for the same period last year. Dismal Week Of Exchange For Canadian Investors at Toronto, Ln acon rl slid 4% to 68%, Royal 3% to 79%, Montreal 2% to 65, ~~ onto-Dominion 4 to 68% and Nova Scotia % to 14%. Brokers could give no reason for the sharp drop in bank is- sues. However, since the begin- ning of the year the price of bank stocks has risen sharply. Other losses went to Chrysler off 2% to 44%4, Harding Carpets 2 to 15, ITL Industries 1% to 3414, Consolidated Paper 1% to 39% and Stelco % to 22%. On the plus side of the ledger, B.C. Sugar rose 2 to 34, CPR 1% to 69% and Canadian Brew- eries and Magna Electronics % each to 7% and 20%. Consolidated Marbenor high- lighted speculative activity, jumping 2.55 to 4.80. The com- pany holds a 21-per-cent inter- est in Bowden Lake Mines in Manitoba, which announced it has encountered nickel mineral- ization. BASE METALS GAIN Among base metals, Inco gained 1% to 99% and Denison 1% to 69%. Noranda declined 1% to 51%. Silver issues, which ran up sharp gains last week following a U.S. government announce- ment that it is restricting sales of the metal, were trimmed in profit-taking. Siscoe dropped 65 cents to 5.2) and Silverfields 20 cents to 3.75. United Keno moved up 35 cents to 5.70. Among western oils, Dome ad- vanced 2 to 55 while Canadian Superior retreated 1% to 35% and Pacific Pete % to 13%. On index, golds were down .90 to 167.01, base metals .01 to 95.97 and western oils 1.84 to 155.02. At Montreal, utilities were up .13 to 146.86 while banks slid 6.02 to 129.53 and papers 3.02 to Banks took it on the chin and 113.97 By JOHN BEST MOSCOW (CP)--There has been a new burst of specula- tion that Boris Pasternak's controversial novel Doctor Zhivago will be published in the Soviet Union. That boosted his earnings for the year to $80,832 and for Pasternak died in 1960. Speculation that the ban may be lifted goes back at least two years. It gained impetus recently with the dis- closure that a literary com- mission had recommended that the complete works of Pasternak, including Doctor Zhivago, be printed. Author Ilya Ehrenburg is said to be one of a group of influential writers involved in trying to get the novel pub- lished. ACCEPTED AS POET Pasternak the poet has al- ready been fully rehabilitated --and it was as a poet that he made a literary name for himself long before he wrote his famous novel. In recent years a number of volumes of his poetry have been pub- lished, one of which included verses from Doctor Zhivago. Sources close to the move- ment aimed at restoring Pas- ternak to respectability say they have won a promise that, once printing of his poetic works is complete, considera- tion will be given to publishing Doctor Zhivago. Some experienced Western observers, however, consider Publication Of Zhivago In Russia Seen Probable it highly unlikely that Soviet cultural controllers would ac- quiesce in printing and circu- lation of a book described by some readers as an anti-So- viet testament. Others view the matter dif- ferently. They see the novel as fundamentally a human and non-political work, the tragic story of two people, Zhivago and his sweetheart Lara, who find it impossible to adjust to the tumultuous conditions of the Russian rev- olution. PANNED BY CRITIC They point to dramatic turning-points in the book where Pasternak's sympathy is obviously with the couple, doomed personally as well as Politically by being offspring of the old order in Russia. A possible sign that Zhivago may be published here is that it has recently been discussed openly in the Soviet press, possibly for the first time since 1958. The book was panned, to be sure, by Galina Serebryakova in Literaturnaya Gazeta--Lit- erary Gazette. She called it "unsuccessful and dull." Her treatment was supposed to be of its artistic merits rather than as a political tract. Giving her reminiscences of Pasternak. personally, Mrs. Serebryakova wrote that he was "'a man of great talent who, in his own way, sin- cerely loved his country. Other Russian writers have gone much further in the last year or so in praise of Paster- nak. Some have even claimed him as a true son of the revolution, though not himself a revolutionary. Presumably it would be in this spirit that Soviet authori- ties would permit the book to be published, while carefully avoiding giving it anything resembling a stamp of ap- proval. By J. C, GRAHAM Canadian Press Correspondent AUCKLAND (CP) -- Increas- ing criticism 'is being voiced here at the lack of a New Zea- ag exhibit at Canada's Expo ohe decision not to exhibit drew adverse comment even be- fore the opening of the exhibi- tion. With mounting indications of its outstanding success, criti- cism is growing accordingly. Newspapers which have car- ried big display articles on the event have at the same time given much prominence to the fact that New Zealand is the/d only member of the "old Com- monwealth" not represented. Writing from Montreal, New Zealander Howard Karn sent a typical letter to one of the Auckland newspapers express- ing sentiments that numerous other New Zealand visitors have put forward. He said: "I visited Expo 67 and was disturbed. New Zealand has no representation yet half a million people a day are visiting Expo. What an opportunity has been LL unwanted articles. Over Lack Of Expo Exhibit Zealand. We have much to tell the world. "Ts it too late to get a pavilion close to the Australian pavilion? Many of the smaller African States are grouped together without causing adverse com- ment. Israel, with a population similar to ours and a junior na- tion, has a small but impres- sive pavilion. We could have done the same. We should be here." Canadian officials made sev- eral visits to New Zealand be- fore the deadline passed last year. The New Zealand govern- ment did not publicly state its r for decli to exhibit, but it has been widely stated that it felt the cost was tvo high. New Zealand is in the throes of an economic crisis, caused largely by a decline in foreign exchange funds, and all over- seas spending is being tightly controlled. When it became apparent that the New Zealand government felt it could not afford a major prestige pavilion, further talks were held with the Canadians on the possibilities of some form issed. ... 1 am proud of New of low-cost participation.
