RCAC REC TEE RAEN SERA: - +» They Are Needed To 'NEW HOMES ON ACADIA STREET IN OSHAWA Meet Growing Population ' Home Builders In Area Optimistic About Future Oshawa and District Home Builders Association are opti- mistic about future construc- tion in Oshawa, says president Cal Potter. "We are almost certain that home construction this year will increase to the 1965 total of permits issued," said Mr, Pot- ter. In 1965, the ne issued 668 single family dwelling permits, compared to 422 in 1966. "Last year, construction was caught up in the economy changes but it seems to be clearing itself now," said Mr. Potter. "We can look for more town houses to be built in the future -- with the increase of taxes and land prices, people will be looking more toward them. , "Apartment building con- struction in Oshawa has slowed because a few years ago there ,was a great demand but it 'seems to have reached the point where there is enough for Oshawa's city council. "They are doing a good job and I feel that the industrial commissioner is finally getting the backing that he needed," Mr. Potter said. "From what I can gather, more inquiries are being re- ceived from industries, desir- ous of settling in Oshawa, than ever before." Mr. Potter says that he sees in the short span of 10 years, Oshawa, becoming as large as Hamilton, or at least be a major centre as Hamilton is. "This of course, will depend a great deal on our city fathers," Mr. Potter said. The Go Transit commuter also be a deciding factor in some industries coming here. "This will bring new people and more construction. It is our hope to be able to service these people in the best pos- sible way and to work alon with Oshawa as it grows. "One major project that I feel must be looked into imme- diately, is the development of the downtown area. Oshawa is on the upswing and it would be a pity to have all of these assets and a poor downtown area. "But it will come, it will have to come. Oshawa has too much Pt gua for it not to. come," he said. The year 1966 began with a strong demand for fresh and frozen fish generally. Prices in the U.S, for some varieties reached record highs. The U.S. market weakened about mid- year due to greater European production, the U.S, tight-money policy and relaxation of th rule of abstinence from meat for Roman Catholics.
