By BRUCE LEVETT Canadian Press Sports Editor WOODBRIDGE, Ont. : (CP) Come in, Miss Twitchell and bring your book--it's time for an open letter to Arnie, Jack and the rest of the boys on the tour. Gentlemen, if you are con- sidering taking in the $200,000 world golf tournament this fall be warned--you will be playing a course that few, if any, of you have seen before. And it won't do much good to sneak up for a preliminary peek because the course doesn't. really exist as such. The championship layout is made up of 18 tough holes taking in part of the east and west courses at the new Board of Trade club just north of Toronto. To give you some idea of what's in store Sept. 1-4, the tournament sponsors took a group of writers around it the other day. In brief, the front nine has more sand than a warehouse full of egg-timers and it's all tastefully arranged in Jayne Mansfield-shaped bunkers. The back nine is designed to look like Venice in flood season. 7,024 YARDS LONG And hilly? There's even a Small Investment Pays Off As Silver Nib Lee Clicks ORANGEVILLE, Ont. (CP)-- Silver Nib Lee was a broken- down race horse with legs like stovepipes until Bill Stirton gambled a new home that the grey trotter could win again. "He had won only $12 last season," Stirton said. 'He picked that up at a country fair. But I had seen this horse trot as a five-year-old when he earned $7,000 in the United States." So when Stirton, who owned butcher shops in this central Ontario community and in Shelburne, saw Silver Nib Lee on the auction block last au- tumn, he took part of the down payment .on a new home and bought him, "One bidder said $500," Stir- ton said. "I looked around and said $600 and he was mine." The investment proved a solid one and Silver Nib Lee has returned $10,053 to date this season. "He had a hind bow when I| bought him--his hind legs were like stovepipes. I bought him purely on speculation, because his type of injury is rare among trotters and pacers. But it's set now." Silver Jib Lee was only part year-old father of four also Knave, an untried three-year- old, during the same auction. His share in Kings Knave was $550 and the horse has already returned $5,305. Stirton became interested in harness racing 'about six years ago. "I was intending to have some fun with training one at the fairground track here," he said. "But the more I became interested in it, and with the greater length of the Ontario racing season, I decided with my wife (Betty) last year to try it full time. "TI guess I won about $13,000 with a few horses I had for other people all last year and last fall, decided on adding more of my own." Stirton now trains, drives and shoes his own horses as well as four others he trains for other owners, SOCCER SCORES LONDON (CP)-- Wednesday soccer results: INTERNATIONAL England 2 Spain 0 INTER-CITIES FAIRS CUP Semi-Final Second Leg Leeds United won: on aggre- of Stirton's gamble. By then you may need it because this layout goes 7,024 yards, Par is 71, Local pros who accom- panied the writers 'called it "a brute-force course.' The consensus was that there are three birdie holes on the front nine--No. 1, a 506-yard par 5 that doglegs left; No. 4, a 336-yard par 4 that cranks sharply left, and No. 6, 524 yards and par 5. The traps are designed to catch the 225-yard hitter so most of you will fly over these with ease. The greens are something else. Some of them are saddle-backed, others are multi-tiered and all are placed to roll your ball gently toward a bunker. In some cases there are greens requiring an up- hill-downhill putt. Pro Al Balding says. the golfer who gets onto the wrong tier on these two-tier greens is "looking at three putts." "Club judgment is going to be a factor--there are five clubs difference front to back on some of these greens." NO BIRDIES The back nine is even longer and pro Moe Norman, Woodbridge Course Provides Severe Test For Golf Pros looking at the eight par 48 and one 3, says "'there isn't a birdie hole in the lot." The par 3 is the 177-yard 12th' and it's solid water al- most from tee to green. Shank one left and you're into a reservoir. Put one to the right and it's in the Humber River. The 13th crosses the Hum- ber twice in a manner cal- culated to catch your second shot. The 14th also cuts the river in two places and they've moved the tee back into a chute in the woods; if the trees don't get you, the water probably will. For the writers and pros, the 13th was a symbol of the entire course with three golf balls nesting on a mid-river sandbar. The 15th is relatively easy. Play a slight fade to the right and you're in good lie for this 370-yard par 4. Fade a bit too much and it's back into the old Humber again. Play it safe and straight and you have a comeback shot right toward the water. And keep the ball low when- ever you can. The wind some- times blows northwest across these river holes and some- times it blows southeast. Al- ways it blows strong. It's a long course, it de- mands concentration and it's hilly. You will be tired when you reach that last hill.
