Bag ® SAVE I4c ® New Status For Women PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)--The United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. took steps Tuesday to enhance the status of women in the church. "Our church {s still bound by many old attitudes and tradi- tions," said the denomination's general assembly, adding that discrimination against women stems from the "patriarchal at- titude"' of ancient Hebrew, Greek and Roman societies. A special report approved by the church's representatives from across the U.S. ordered a study project designed to re examine the role of women in church and society and seek ways to root out "'sub-Christian views' of women's church fun¢> tions, The 3,300,000-member denome ination, nearing the close of its week - long governing parlia- ment, appealed earlier to the ~|U.S. to restrict the war in Viet- nam. It also called on the governe ment to enunciate a clear nae tional policy "opposing the sys- tem of apartheid," racial sepae ration in South Africa. In addition, it called for @ U.S. "policy of openness' to- ward diplomatic recognition of China, and favored steps to bring that country into the United Nations, with Nationalist China keeping its seat. Schwartz, there js room for improvement. A survey, taken with the help of the Canadian Union of Stu- dents, shows that during the last five years 13 universities have set up health services and 12 have established psychiatrie services, Of 49 Institutions surveyed, 77.5 per cent now provide some form of health service, 44.9 per cent have a psychiatric service and 38.8 per cent have infirme ary beds available. SERVICE IS VARIED There are wide variations is the type and standard of service provided, says Dr, Schwartz, a consultant psychi- atrist at the University of Brit- ish Columbia health service. Students involved in the sur- vey proved deeply concerned about the amount and quality of services provided. About 55 per cent "felt they needed pro- fessional assistance with emo- tional or psychological probe lems during their university cae reers."" They make heavy use of ex- isting university health and counselling services, averaging 1.54 visits per student, the sur- vey showed, almost three per cent of students use psychiatrie facilities. Only one Canadian university approaches the American Col- lege Health Association stand- ard of one physician and one nurse per 1,000 students. ii 2 Is New Zip-Open Tins POWER PERFECT GRAIN FED BEEF RED-- BLUE BRAND TENDER JUICY - Ans 49 TENDER JUICY } FRESH MINCED STEAK.D0 (STEAK. 99 CHOICE CANADIAN FISH DEPT.
