No one knows exactly which comes first. In France, the mass-produc- tion market now is a force to be reckoned with. It no longer can be considered the poor step- sister of Paris couture. French ready-to-wear clothes no longer are watered - down copies of influential silhouettes launched in the high - fashion salons. During the last year, particu- larly since the mini - skirts and youth craze eclipsed all other fashion trends, the couturiers have frequently been influenced by specific ideas evolved by the group of creative designers working for the ready-to-wear industry. Mass-produced lines, ranging from the low - priced clothes shown at the twice-- -yearly ready-to-wear salons at the Porte de Versailles to the cou- turiers' own ready-made bou- tique collections, are shown three months before the couture presentations. DON'T WAIT FOR JULY French Ready-to-Wear Fashions Winning Battle Against Cou es The French reag@¥ - to - wgar fashion industry embraces some 1,500 different firms, employing about 50,000 people. During the last 10 years, the industry has doubled its turn- over, achieving volume sales of two billion francs--about $400,- 000,000--in 1966. At the end of April, the au- tumn and winter ready-to-wear salons, with a collective show- ing at the Porte de Versailles and. stands in three major Paris hotels, drew 6,000 profes- sional French buyers and 3,000) foreign ones. While adaptations of Yves Saint Laurent's trouser - and-| seen | waistcoat suits are throughout the collections, the ready-to-wear designers are cre- ating their own new looks with the "dandy" line, the major- ettes, the military and a liberal dose of Russian influence. POPULARIZED MINI The mini-skirt itself actually reached its wearers via the ready-to-wear trade, Such young, swinging, ready- to-wear designers as Victoire, Ted Lapidus and the singer- stylist, Sylvie Vartan, get maxi- mum credit for Jaunching the "mini-look" in France -- and they have no intention of relin- quishing it, Most store buyers now pur- chase their basic stock for the any innovation which the cou- turiers may attempt in July or at the end of January. Hemlines, however, are tradi- tionally shown slightly longer next season without regard forjfor wear during the colder} months. Coats in the new collections frequently are cut shorter than Children Honor Silver Anniversary Of Their Parents Mr..and Mrs. Grover R.
