It is a western, his 13th. Although he is not as identified with west- erns as Gary Cooper and John Wayne, he has _ increasingly come back to outdoor epics. Stewart is wearing grey flan- nel pants, a blue sweater and tweed. The outfit looks lived in. A fedora covers most of his white hair. But tufts stick out the back, his hair being long for the frontier role. Aside from squint lines beside the eyes, he shows little evi- dence of the passage of time. On the seat is a battered leather script holder. "Roz Russell gave me that when we were making a picture called No Time for Comedy in 1939," he explains. - "The binding is steel, so it won't break. But boy, some of these scripts you get nowadays sure put a strain on it! "I don't know why they make pictures that way. You get a script that is so fat you know the picture's got to run four hours. There isn't any picture good enough for four hours, and they end up by cutting the thing to pieces. Trouble is, they don't want to take out the big, ex- pensive scenes. "So they take out the scenes that tell you about the charac- ters, and you end up with a movie that doesn't make sense. that seems stupid to me. People are interested in charac- ters, not the big spectacle scenes." Stewart has known hits--Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Phil- adelphia Story (Academy Award, best actor), Broken Ar- row, Glenn Miller Story, Shen- andoah. He has also had his share of flops --Pot of Gold, Magic Town, Carbine Williams, The Spirit of St. Louis. "You can never tell when @ picture is going to be good," he says. All you need is a set of water colors; are there any school- age artists in the house? Just use plenty of opaque white, which will hide the general brown color of water stain. You don't need to be either talented or meticulous to disguise the damage enough so nobody will notice it. MUSTY CLOSET QUESTION: A closet in our apartment was closed for a month. During our absence, water leaked from the apart- ment overhead. No damage done, the plaster all dried out OK. But how to get rid of the closet's musty odor? ANSWER: Along the base- board, fasten a rod-shaped alu- minum - covered electric heat- er, which is specifically made to dry out confined spaces and prevent mildew, with its result- ing odor. Most electrical deal- ers, many hardware stores car- ry this damp chaser. It warms, dries and circulates the air. Give this a little time, and it shouldn't be long before the odor goes away. Mr. Hanson has yet to make his bow in London, England, but is now defying theatrical super- stition by presenting a full scale revival of thé 1927 musi- cal, The Desert Song. He is staking $75,000 on the season's biggest gamble by turning actor - manager to pre- sent the 40-year-old musical. If The Desert Song survives, Mr. Hanson plans tu produce his own operetta, When We Were Young, based-on the ven- erable tear jerker Smilin' Through... It did well on a 23-week pro- vincial tour last year but Lon- don managements turned it down as "too sentimental". Hanson thinks The Desert Song will show them. Advanced bookings are confirming his optimism. He believes what the public really wants is old-style melody in its shows. It's a gamble that has failed in the past, even for such gift- ed entertainers as the late George Formby. Painting Buying or Selling!
