I had them on both eyes and had them removed in 1963. It was successful. I can read, sew and see everything, and am happy about it. I was totally blind in one eye and partially in the other, and both cataracts were removed within two weeks. My neighbor and I were hav-| ing a discussion. One of her friends was going to have it done and a friend said her doc- tor told her that they take the eyes out and operate and sew them back in. I was going to tell them how I thought it was done when an- other neighbor said yes, they did it to her eyes, so I didn't say anything. Please exolain t.--M. C, Heaven knows how these ridiculous notions get started. The eyes stay exactly where they always have been. A "'cat- aract" is the lens portion, in the pupil of the eye, which has become cloudy and thus will not transmit light. The operation to remove these cataracts, or lenses, goes back at least as far as the Persians several thousand years ago. It was then an un- pleasant operation because they had only crude instruments and no anesthetics, but at least they succeeded in letting a little more light into the eyes, and afforded some semblance of vision. Today, anesthesia prevents pain, and delicate instruments make possible great precision. Technically, operations vary a bit; in some cases they are Cataract Operation Performed On Pupil By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD and then it is removed surg- ically. Afterward special glasses are fitted to compensate for the missing lens. More recently contact lenses have been devel- oped for this purpose and are very successful. The eye is not removed, It doesn't have to be. Dear Dr. Molner: I am 18 and getting hunchbacked. I bought a brace but my shoulders get so sore I can't wear it. I know some permanent damage has been done, but what can I do to prevent it from getting worse? I know I can stand a lot straighter, but I can't do it for long. Could you recommend anything? It hurts to have peo- ple keep telling me to stop slouching.--J.._ 8. At 18, this is probably a mat- ter of habit -- faulty posture. Calistenics (push-ups, arm ex- ercises, etc.) should help. As the muscles strengthen, and as you keep increasing the time you stand up straight, good pos- ture will become easier. I would by all means consull an orthopedist, however, to make sure that no defect of the spine is at fault. He could give you more explicit directions on exercises that will help you. Dear Dr. Molner: I'm 12 and weigh 230 pounds. I go. on diets, starving half to death but I still gain. I'm five feet 11. I have a tendency to gain 10 pounds ev- ery month. I wonder if you can help me without my going to the hospital. I'm a boy.-- c. 8. F. You're a mighty big boy for your age--too big. You might think that world championship play the mental lapses which occasion- ally beset all of us would not occur, but the fact is that even the top experts sometimes de- velop feet of clay at crucial in For example, take this hand played by Italy and Great Brit- ian in 1965. D'Alelio (East for Italy) opened with a club, in- dicating a balanced hand with Konstam doubled and West (Pabis Ticci), in line with the Roman Club system responded a diamond to show negative values. Flint doubled for penal- ties and D'Alelio passed, indi« cating support for diamonds. But after Konstam passed, Pabis Ticci bid one spade, his real suit, and, Flint then show: ed interest in reaching a game It was now Konstam fell front grace by bidding three spades, Somehow or other the bidding had corfused him and he in h¢ Flint was baffled by the bid; but assumed he was being asked to choose another suit as trump: Accordingly, he bid four hearts. But Konstam, still in a state of confusion, bid four spades, which Pabis Ticci doubled and which Flint, now throuoghly A terrible disaster might now have occured except that when four spades doubled came back to Konstam he asked for a re- view of the bidding. When this was furnished and he realized he had misunderstood the bid- ding, he ran to four notrump. This was doubled by East and became the final contract. Konstam made ten tricks on the nose for a score of 810 points. At the other table, the British East opened with a no- times pays. trump, West responded two spades, was allowed to play there and went down one.
