~ 7 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturday, May 20, 1967 OTHER PARTIES MATCH HARE Socreds Playing It Cool In Alberta Election Race "EDMONTON (CP) -- Aesop wrote that an over-confident hare once raced a tortoise and lost. le contended that slow and steady runners always win the eeBut in Alberta three political parties seem to disagree with him. The Liberals, Progressive Conservatives and New Demo- crats have been panting for weeks in a bid to beat Social Gredit--and each other--across thé finish line in next Tuesday's provincial general election. Social Credit seems to be bet- ting on Aesop. Premier E. C. Manning waited 11 days after calling the election April 14 before ventur- ing on to the hustings on his own behalf. He was nominated again in Edmonton Strathcona Centre and seems. certain to triumph in this election to start his 33rd year in the legislature. He has been premier for 24 years. Mr. Manning is a firm be- \liver in' strong, stable govern- |ment and says voters go to the polls to elect a government, not an opposition. The last legislature had 58 So- Timing Vital To Success In Comedy - OTTAWA (CP) -- Timing for politicians, like comedians, is an essential element of success. It seems to take on even) greater importance on the eve of. elections. With five byelec- |servative regime. fioris scheduled for Monday, May 29, the federal government) is expected to time a couple of ammouncements for major im- pact on the voters. The first appears to be aimed at.the Sudbury seat where the Liberals are fighting to beat off a. threatened New Democrat coup. The NDP ran a close sec- ond to the Liberal in the 1965 general election. -Anformants say the govern- ment will make public late in the week the new set of stand- ards to measure whether an area qualifies for incentives to industry to establish new enter- prises. EXPECT INCENTIVES The general expectation is that the new criteria will make it possible to designate virtually ali of Northern Ontario, includ- ing the Sudbury area, for such aid to new industry. "Incentives can go as high as $5,000,000 in cash grants, ex- émpt from federal income tax, om new machinery, equipment and buildings plus accelerated capital cost allowances of up to 50 per cent on new production machinery and equipment and up to 20 per cent on new build- or significant extensions of ting buildings. The same sort of electoral benefits can be sought the day after the Sudbury voting when Nova Scotians go to the polls for a provincial election. With Halifax and Dartmouth, N:S., trying for some time to get on the designated list, Lib- Sharp Drop In New Jobs OTTAWA (CP) -- While Can- ada's labor force continues to row by leaps and bounds, new opportunities have' shown a Sharp decline in recent months. 'The result has been that un- employment levels for the first four months of this year are 'well above the same period last year. In January the country had 22,000 more jobless persons than in.the previous January. Feb- ruary was up 40,000 on the year- té-year --_ March 59,000 and April 67,000. During those four months the @verage year-to-year increase in the labor force was 273,000 while the average gain in jobs ran at 226,000, a job deficit of 47,000. Inthe comparable period of 1966 the labor force was up 256,000 on the average and new jobs 308,000, for a job surplus of 52,- 000. TREND REVERSES "In April of last year, for ex- ample, the country had 353,000 more jobs than it did a year earlier. The comparable figure this April was 175,000, or less than half. ~ Unemployment in April of this year stood at 375,000, an in- crease of 67,000 from the year- earlier total. Expressed as a oe of the total labor 'orce, it went to 4.9 from 4.1. The rest of the 63-seat house was made up of three Liberals, one NDP and one coalition member. The next legislature will have two additional seats, one each a result of redistribution. RUN FULL SLATE In the running are 236 candi- dates--including full slates in all 65 constituencies: for Social Credit and the NDP. There were 225 candidates in the 1963 gen- eral election, The Conservatives have fielded 46 candidates and the Liberals 45. The remainder are three coalition aspirants backed jointly by the Liberals and Conservatives, eight Inde- pendents, two Ind t So- cial Crediters, and two Indepen- dent Progressive Conservatives.
