THE CSHAWA Tus, ednesday, May 17, 1967 Moliere's Comedy Presented By GAIL SCOTT MONTREAL (CP)--The 17th century came to life again Mon- day at Place des Arts as Mont- real's Theatre du Nouveau Monde Troupe gave a rollick- ing rendition of Moliere's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. The comedy - ballet, directed by Jean Gascon, was provided with a new. musical score by Montrealer Gabriel Char- pentier, The TNM presentation was a premiere performance in con- junction with Expo's World Fes- tival, Judging from audience recep- tion, it was a successful attempt by this troupe to interpret the art of Moliere which is a com- bination of comedy and farcical ballet, firmly interwoven with a thread of reality. The story is of a bourgeois gentleman with aspirations to- wards the noble ranks of soci- ety. Unfortunately, all his money cannot make him cultivated, and he is duped by his dancing teacher, his music teacher, his philosophy teacher and finally his tailor. Gilles. Groulx as the bourge- ois gentleman played the fool to perfection. ASTUTE ACCOMPLICE tailor, played by Roland Gana- met, arrives with a hideous new suit. Part of the decor is a huge' silk rose which adorns the re- gion below the midriff. The gentleman asks that it be removed, but the tailor easily convinces him that all the peo- ple of quality are doing it. The gentleman willingly concedes. Another amusing perform- ance is given by Denise Pelle- tier who plays the maid. As the play draws to a close, |} the gentleman betrothes his daughter to the "great Turc" because he wants to be certain she marries into a noble fam-/ ily. The Turc of course is the daughter's lover in disguise. The daughter is played by Francine Racette, and the lover by Jean Perraud. Protesting all the way through at her husband's ex- travagances, and representing reality, is the gentleman's wife, played by Gisele Schmidt. Critic had high praise for Jean Gascon's direction. Jacob Siskind, critic of The!' Gazette, said he did not fixe the production at all but praised Denise Pelleteier in the role) of the maid, and said she is to be given credit for keeping the production going. Influx Feared Of Unskilled HAMILTON (CP) -- The fed- eral government's recent White Paper on immigration laid down a unique immigration policy which could result in an influx of more unskilled workers than the country can handle, William H. Cranston, chairman of the Ontario Economic Council, said Monday. Mr. Cranston told the 1 meeting of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce that "we can no longer afford trial - and - error administration." Predicting that Ontario tax- payers eventually be required to pay for the retraining and upgrading of most of the un- skilled immigrant workers, Mr. Cranston said it is wrong to bring in unskilled workers from other countries when the num- ber of unskilled jobs available is becoming insufficient for the unskilled Canadian-born work- ers available. But, he added, establishing entry standards for immigrants could result in accusations of discrimination. "Tt is time we got away from this narrow approach. It no longer matters what extraction we are, this country is going to be what we made it."
