Turn First Sod Sunday For Kingsview Church The congregation of Kings- view, formerly King Street, at this location with increasing United Church, will mark an- other milestone in its more than 100 years of existence this Sunday when a sod turning ceremony is held at 3 p.m. at the site of the new church. Plans for the new church were drawn by Brown, Bresley and Brown, Toronto architects. The general contract was awarded last week to H. M. Brooks Limited, of Oshawa and construction at the Wilson Road and Adelaide Avenue site will commence immediately. The decision to erect the new church arose out of the destruc- tion by fire, Jan. 24, 1966, of the church on King Street East. | Not dismayed by what seemed an irreparable loss, the trus- tees met that afternoon to dis- cuss plans for the future. It was a question of rebuilding on the same site or seeking a new lo- cation. The latter choice was finally adopted and during the summer the official board pur- papa the new site from the city. The name of the new church was decided at the January, 1967, annual meeting. Final plans and specifications were approved early in April and tenders were called. FOUNDED IN 1857 The history of the congrega- tion dates fromm 1857 when Rev. John Pinch, a minister of the Bible Christian Church, then stationed at Bowmanville, be- gan holding services in the Sons of Temperance Hall, situated at 156 Simcoe Street South. He was associated with Rev. W. R. Roach and for some four or five. years services were held Such was the growth of the congregation that in 1862 Rev. John Harris was appointed min- ister. Under this able leader- ship the church on Metcalfe Street was erected in 1863. This site was on the north side, half way between Centre and Sim- coe Streets. Several notable revivals greatly increased the member- ship and led to the enlargement of the church. The first of these took place in 1873 during the pastorate of Rev. John Kenner. Then came a notable revival conducted by Rev. Walter Ayres which continued for 13 weeks, By 1882 there was a strong tide of opinion in favor of a general Methodist reunion and in 1883 the Methodist Church in Canada, the Primi- tive Methodist Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada and the Bible Christian Church formulated a basis of union acceptable to all parties. From that date Metcalfe Church grew steadily. Under THE Wesleyan Methodist Church Hillsdale Public Schoo! Oshawa Bivd. N., Minister Rev. Walter Jewell 305 Rossland Road East 9:45 a.m.--Sunday Schoo! This offer was accepted in January, 1912. Sev- eral sites were considered with the Goodman property, at the corner of King and Charles Streets being approved. The Hill the church was again en- larged in 1885 at a cost of $1,000 borrowed on a note. In 1889 the Sunday School room was reno- vated and in 1890 arrangements were made for a revival to be conducted by Crossley and Hun- ter, world famous evangelists. Metcalfe Street Church contin- ued to prosper spiritually the next 20 years. NEW CHURCH The first official move to- wards a new church was during the pastorate of Rev. W. Ben- jamin Tucker; and in 1908 the official board passed a resolu- tion approving the sale of the property when it was possible to erect a new church. Mr. Tucker was succeeded by Rev. A. R. Sanderson under whose leadership the mortgage on Metcalfe Church was_ burned. It was during his pastorate that the renowned evangelists, Jeff and John McComb, conducted services for several weeks and many joined the church. With the coming of Rev. S. C. Moore events moved rapidly. In the early fall of 1911 talk of a cost of the site, including the house which later served as a parsonage from 1913 to 1953 was $7,000. The cornerstone of King Street Methodist Church was laid Aug. 6, 1912 and the church was dedicated March 30, 1913. The cost of the church, includ- ing the building site, organ and fixtures was $42,000 which left an indebtedness of $23,000. The growth of the congrega- tion since that time was rapid. From .a_ small congregation with a membership of 520 pay- ing its minister $1,200 per an- num, the caretaker and organ- ist $300 each, it grew to be one of the largest congregations in Oshawa with a total member- ship of 1,356. UNION CELEBRATED In 1916 Rey. J. §. I. Wilson was called to take the place of Mr. Moore. Rev. A. Mansell Irwin assumed the pastorate in 1920 and was succeeded in 1925 by Rev. C. W. DeMille who started a men's Bible Class. It was during his pastorate that special services were held to celebrate the consumation of ceeded Mr. DeMille in 1928 and in 1930 a memorable event was held when the mortgage was burned. On that occasion all the pastors since the building of the church attended. despite Rev. Charles FE. Cragg suc- Rev. Dr. R. L. Cystic Fibrosis is the most common and serious chronic disease of infancy and childhood. It affects the lungs and digestion. Thick gluey mucus clogs the lungs and prevents the flow of digestive juices from the pancreas into the small intestine, The child is prey to pneumonia and often suffers from severe malnutrition. In some C/F babies a blocked intestine at birth requires immediate lifesaving surgery. HOW SERIOUS IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS: Extensive lung damage can occur unless treatment is started early in life. The pancreas unable to function properly, may become scarred and fibrous. C/F kills more youngsters than polio in the pre-vaccine era. It rivals cancer as a cause of death up to age 15. The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation organizes projects like this one to earn money to help care for these kids -- but more important -- with the aid of these public spirited people -- it's nationally recognized Medical Research Board uses your money to aid research projects. --to find the actual cause of Cystic Fibrosis --to find a cure or control of Cystic Fibrosis You'll be Helping 'C.F.'
