That kind of propaganda, say some conservationists, led to the 'superstitious dread'"' that recently caused a small but vocal minority to demand destruction of the wolf in the province, Frank Walden, supervisor of wildlife for the department of lands and forests, says im- migrants brought many tales from Europe of attacks by wolves on humans and domes- tic animals, but they had the wrong animal in mind. Also Drs. Treanor, Sproule end | Rowsell and nurses on 4F, afraid of being eaten by a for the sheep they keep and the deer they hunt. Paul Yakabuski, Conserva- tive ber of the legislature OBITUARIES wolf either--but they do fear ! THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, May 12, 1967 Zz. for Renfrew South, says wolves are responsible for de- pletion of deer herds and sheep flocks in his riding. And the wolves are breeding in the provincially - owned Algen- quin Park. Dr. A. H, Chapeskie 'of Barry's Bay, a town in Yaka- buski's riding near the east- ern limit of the park, told the legislature committee there are more wolves there and fewer deer than in other years. Professional trappers should be permitted to work in the park, where protected wolves are breeding, and the wolf bounty should be in- creased from the present $25 a pelt, he said. The committee adopted his recommendations on trappers and bounties, but Lands and Forests Minister, Rene Bru- nelle did not. BOUNTIES WON'T WORK Increased bounties won't work, Brunelle said, and the department does not intend to abandon its policy of protec- tion for all the wildlife in Algonquin Park. It will, how- ever, extend its 'wolf man- agement program" to any area where wolf control is necessary. Since he spoke, , has ordered the hiring of ad- ditional predator control offi- cers to work with farmers in areas where wolves have at- , tacked domestic animals. He ; has directed a new program to protect deer from their worst enemies--which are not wolves, but the hunger and disease that result from herds too large to be maintained on the available food supply. Brunelle , 1920 Stories Blamed For Fear Of Wolves results of a wolf research pro- ! gram that has been conducted : in Algonquin Park since 1958, . George Kolenosky, a predator control research expert with the department, says the pro- gram- proved that the wolf population does not multiply because it is controlled by some sort of birth control. HUNTERS KILL FAWNS If hunters are having less luck finding deer to shoot, it is not because of wolf preda- tion, conservationists say, but rather the result of man's ac- tivities. More than half the deer killed by wolves are older animals, but 90 per cent of the deer killed by hiinters are fawns and females, the breeding stock of the future. Deer are gone from areas that once were good hunting ground because the food sup- ply has diminished through man's control of the forest. They have moved to where it is more plentiful. Steps are being taken to improve the growth on which deer feed in areas open to hunters, but conservationists emphasize that nature itself, through starvation and dis- ease, will always limit the size of deer populations, | They do not deny that wolves kill farm livestock, any more than they deny wolves kill some deer. But | ia Say coyotes, dogs gone | Brunelle acted partly on the wild and hybrids of the two are more often responsible for the killing. Wolf packs that operate in farm country can be controlled without resort- ing to the eradication of whole populations. MRS.
