Relative V7 by Vf 43 ZY 44 i. ag YOUR HEALTH By Emotional Dear Dr. Molner; Can an asthma attack come on because of a nervous condition, anger, jealousy, etc.? Would you advise allergy tests or do you consider it a waste of money? Is it easy to dis- tinguish between asthma and emphysema? Does emphysema develop from asthma? What would be your recom- mendation for an asthma pa- tient?--N. N. Emotional upsets most de- cidedly help bring on asthma that such tensions always are present with young asthma pa- tients, and very often in older ones. Besides the emotions you mention, many others may be involved--for one, fear of an- other attack! This does not mean, of course, that emotions are the whole cause of asthma. They are not, but they are important. Allergy tests? Yes, I would, in general, advise them,, be- cause sensitivity (allergy) to at the root of asthma. A study of your history and physical examination should precede such tests, however. Information from those sources, plus any observations you may make (when and under what conditions your asthma bothers you) can be a valuable guide, saving time and money by indi- cating what types of allergy tests are most likely to be helpful. Medications to prevent the airways from swelling, avoid- ance of things known to bother your allergy, and in selected cases a series of desensitization injections are the basic weapons against asthma, along with thoughtful efforts to prevent Asthma Attacks Start © By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD Upsets letting things upset you emo- tionally. A physician will have no dif- ficulty in distinguishing between asthma and emphysema, but there are occasions when they both may be present. Continued pressure on the lungs from asthma can be one of several jconditions contributing to em- |physema. | Dear Dr. Molner: How soon after birth do they test a baby for brain damage if they suspect something wrong? Are the par- ents informed of the results? I am very concerned about a baby granddaughter. -- Mrs. A, T. One test, the PKU, is done a few days after birth. This is a chemical test and does not show brain damage; it shows a con- dition which, unless treated by suitable diet, will cause retarda- tion later. If the test is positive, the parents would be informed; otherwise not. Some forms of retardation or brain damage are apparent or strongly suspected at_ birth, mongolism being one. Other types ma not be detected until the baby is several weeks or several months. old, but general physicians and pediatricians are watchful for such signs. That's one of the reasons for having a baby examined periodically. Dear Dr. Molner: Last June | noticed two small bumps on my foot. The doctor said they were plantar warts and gave me Medicine to put on once a day with instructions to. wash it off in the morning. That was two months ago. More seeds are appearing and my foot hurts so I can hardly walk. My doctor didn't tell me to come back. Is it supposed to THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, May 9, 1967 13 BRIDGE By B. Some hands have built-in traps to catch the unwary. Here is an easy one to fall into. West led a spade. Declarer jducked two rounds and took the jthird one with the ace. On the spades he discarded two hearts from dummy. He then cashed the queen of clubs and led a club to the ace, West showing out. South could not afford to establish the suit now by giving up a club be- cause the defence would then cash two more spades to defeat him a trick. So he led a diamond to the ace and another one back to the queen on which East produced the jack. But when he then cashed the king of clubs and {continued with the ten of dia- |monds, he came to the end of |his resources. | He could neither afford to let the ten hold, nor to overtake it with the king, for in either case it would be his last dia- mond trick. West had kept his jdiamonds and the apparent- 'ly innocuous nine proved to be ja stumbling block for South, So |declarer went down one. | When the play is analyzed, lit can be seen that South would have made the contract had he jled diamonds before clubs, but that is the right line of play. By attacking diamonds first, declarer is able to take advan- tage of the possibility that one opponent was dealt the single- ton or doubleton jack. The queen of clubs then serves as an entry to cash the fourth dia- mond. There is no advantage in lead- ing clubs first, because that suit takes care of itself. It either breaks 3-2 or it doesn't. It is the diamond suit that r- quires special attention, Adios Alice Wins Feature TORONTO (CP) -- Adios Alice, driven by Harold McKin- ley and owned by Ted, Elgin and Charles Armstrong of Brampton, Ont., won the fea- tured $3,500 Kew Beach pace at Greenwood Raceway Saturday. The pacer defeated Blaze Pick by a nose in 2:05 1-5. It was Adios Alice's fourth vic- tory in 12 races this season. Adios Alice paid $10, $3.70 and $2.80, Blaze Pick returned $2.70 and $2.40, and J. J. Wann, third, paid $2.60. Adios Alice and Blaze Pick Ejalso combined for the $18.80 exactor. Canadian Team Suffers Loss LONDON (Reuters)-- A brit- ish field hockey team defeated Canada's national team 4-0 Sun- day as it wound up its prepara- tion for an international tour- nament at Bremen, West Ger- many, late this month. The Canadians, playing with- out two of their best--Richard Chopling and Alan Raphael, both 34, of Toronto--had to play all 11 men in defence during most of the game. The Canadian team was beaten 1-0 by a British team a week ago in an_intérnational tournament in Madrid. SALLY'S SALLIES "I just received this twenty-~ page letter from Bill, Mother, - All he says is that he still loves me." * Some plantar warts (although not many!) clear up quite eas- ily. Others display varying de- grees of ornery stubbornness. By 'surgery, x-ray, or other methods, your doctor surely can make you more comfortable, He didn't tell you to come back be- cause plantar warts are unpre= dictable. He figured that if you didn't return, the first treatment worked--and that it it did not Suffice, you would return and take this long?--S. M. L. tell him so.
