12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, Mey 8, 1967 30-to-l Shot C 93rd Kentucky LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) --Trainer Lloyd (Boo) Gentry learned a trick from his father about how to treat a tempera- mental horse, and passed the lesSon on to Proud Clarion. It paid off with victory in Sat- urday's Kentucky Derby and the third fastest time in the 93- year history of the classic for three-year-olds. "He's kind of delicate, nerve- wise," was the way Gentry de- scribed his winner Sunday. To help the jumpy thorough- bred overcome this problem, Gentry frequently took him to the paddock, as if getting him ready for a race. After letting him listen to the crowd noise, Gentry would return him to the stable. British Davis Cup Team Survives Canadian Test By CARL MOLLINS BOURNEMOUTH, England (CP) -- Canada's Davis Euro- pean Zone Cup tennis team had almost everything but the killer touch in a four-day war of at- tritition that concluded Sunday with Britain's favorites victori- ous but shaken. The Canadians also lacked a suitable response to a stunning application of English games- manship--a form of psychologi- 4-1 in his final set against Tay- lor, but lost. The doubles Saturday was a repeat case of the Canadians snatching defeat from the jaws of: victory. Belkin and Carpen- ter, paired for the first time, were within a service game of victory five times. Taylor and Bobby Wilson finally won 3-6, 4-6, 8-6, 7-5, 12-10. Taylor worked the most sur- prising ¢ k against Bel- cal warfare first identified by English humorist Stephen Pot- ter: Mike Belkin, Canada's No. 1 seed, failed to see the funny side when Roger Taylor, Brit- din's top ranked seed, turned on the Potter technique full blast in their crucial match Sunday. Many Britons likewise de- plored Taylor's nerve-straining stalling and fussing. Spectators slow - handclapped their man and British sportswriters criti- cized the manner of the victory while applauding the home side's comeback. The 4-to-1 decision in matches @en and lost disguises the closeness of the first-round Eu- ropean Zone tournament, the first Canada-Britain Davis Cup encounter in the event's history. UNDERDOG ROLES The Canadians -- Montreal- born, Florida-based Belkin, 21, Montreal Keith Carpenter, and Bob Bedard, of Sherbrooke, Que.--opened last Thursday de- cided underdogs, Repeatedly, they pushed the Britons to the edge of defeat. Every time but once--Belkin's four-set defeat of Mike Sangster Thursday-- the British players fought back to win. kin Sunday. Belkin, who employs a lethal two-handed backhand as _ the main weapon in his counter-hit- ting style, rushed to a two-set lead, The Canadians sensed vic- tory, certain that Bedard could follow up the seemingly-certain Belkin triumph by wearing down a demoralized Sangster, who was under intense pressure after a series of flops and being SLOWS GAME Taylor, however, slowed his match to a crawl with a lobbing game and dawdling between serves, turning up late after a rain break, then insisting on his right to time out 20 minutes after play had resumed. The game turned in the eighth game of the fourth set, when Belkin failed to cash two chances to salt away the match. Two games later he missed three match-point opportunities. Taylor won 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5} 6-3. Bedard, pressed for time to catch a train to London for hj return flight, went quickly through the motions to give Sangster a 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 decision in the meaningless windup match. An incredulous, angry Belkin In a three-hour grind Friday, , Who emerged from three-year retirement for the Bournemouth date, was leading bemoaned his failure to take aptures dropped from the doubles team. h s|280, was a non - winner as a Derby The noise didn't bother Proud Clarion Saturday, and neither did his 13 competitors, The 30-to-1 shot stormed over the 11%4 miles in 2:00 3-5, finish- ing a length in front of Barbs Delight with 8-to-5 favorite Da- mascus another 1% lengths back. The victory was worth $119,- 700 of the $162,200 purse for Proud Clarion's owners as a crowd estimated at 100,000 poured $1,933,028 through the mutuels on the race. Only two colts, Northern Dan- cer in two minutes flat in 1964, and Decidedly in 2:00 2-5 in 1962, have run the Derby faster, and only two have rewarded their backers better than Proud Clarion, who brought a mutuel win payoff of 62.20. Donerail won at $184.90 in 1913 and Gal- ahadion at $72.40 in 1949. Proud Clarion's victory caused the only commotion of note on a rainy day at the Downs as demonstrations by advocates of an open housing ordinance did not materialize. Some 2,500 national guards- men, city, Jefferson County and state police were on hand to in- sure a smooth running. And it could not have been smoother as far as Proud Clar- ion's schoolmaster was con- cerned, SEEN FOR FIRST TIME Something unusual happened to Proud Clarion in the paddock 15 minutes before the race. For the first time he came face to face with Robert Nelson Ussery, 32, the man who was to ride im. Ussery did not get the mount until 48 hours before the race and then he tried to get released from a riding assignment at an- other track. He almost did not have a workout in the mound Tuesda; so disappointed Gentry that he talked of withholding him from the Derby. But despite the rain Saturday, the track remained fast. Proud Clarion, who Gentry said could have been purchased for $50,000 less than two months two-year-old and never had won a stakes before Saturday. A capacity crowd of 38,424 at West Ham's Upton Park ground saw Manchester open in daz- zling fashion, scoring four goals in the first 25 minutes. Fighting broke out among spectators and a casualty sta- tion was set up in a corner of the ground. Bobby Charlton, Pat Crerand, Billy Foulkes and George Best were Manchester scorers in the opening four-goal burst.
