JPINGS 449.95 CELIA FRANCA'S TROUPE RENOWNED CONCERTO BAROCCO IS ONE OF BALLET'S OFT-REPEATED FAVORITES --- Colorful Production Is Under Direction Of Celia Franca CENTENNIAL PROJECT AT EASTDALE AUDITORIUM National Ballet To Perform The Oshawa Centennial Com- mittee asked the Canadian Con- cert Association of Oshawa several months ago to sponsor the National Ballet of Canada in a performance here. The National Ballet will visit Oshawa on Monday, May 8 and their performance will be at 8.30 p.m. in the new Eastdale Collegiate Auditorium on Har- mony road north. The local appearance of the Ballet is a Centennial project of the Province of Ontario De- partment Council for the Arts. A sparkling evening's enter- tainment will be supplied by 16 star dancers and 12 musi- cians. SIX BALLETS Six exciting ballets will be presented by the National Bal- let's chamber gompany, estab- lished only this spring by artis- tic director Celia Franca for the purpose of bringing the best in ballet to Canadian cities and towns unable to accommodate the full company because of a lack of physical facilities. Prima ballerina Lois Smith, premier danseur Earl Kraul, international award - winning Martine van Hamel and the exciting young Hazaros Surje- Bach's Double Violin Concerto, Death and the Maiden, a haunt- ing duet between a young girl and the shadowy figure of Death, and the saucy, comic One in Five, an audience favor- ite of five clowns at play. Ballet Concert will travel with its own ballet mistress, its own stage crew and production staff and a chamber orchestra of 12 virtuoso musicians from the National Ballet Orchestra, under the direction of George Crum. For more than a decade, the names of Lois Smith and the National Ballet of Canada have been almost synonymous. Since she traded in the itinerant life as a dancer in American musi- cal comedy in 1951 for the equally nomadic life as a bal- lerina with Canada's fledgling National Ballet, Lois Smith has captured and held the imagina- tion and affection of ballet audiences across the continent in a wide variety of starring roles. As the National Ballet's prima ballerina, she has held centre stage in dozens of bal- lets in the company's reper- toire, from the demanding dual role in the classical Swan Lake {to the passionate, anguished jheroine of Antony Tudor's con- temporary Lilac Garden. 725-3519 jan are only four members of| Toi Smith reached the sum- sd Lea titi nant Of mit of her profession despite ancers who will present @/breaking the first cardinal rule selection of short ballets de- ballet she started: late igned especially for their tal- ae é signe Although she took her first bal- ents, let class at the age of 10, two ' first wasn't too congenial for Sydney|ade I sold scotch. 2 It years later than most experts oe ; ¥| Sie ak eae tour, three new ballets have|recommend, it wasn't until five j e as a lad, however, because of)was there, and easier to do. East- dale Collegiate soon), reached the summit of her profession despite breaking the first cardinal rule of ballet -- she started late. AMhough she took her first ballet class at the age of 10, two years later than most experts recommend, it wasn't until five years later' that she embarked on the in- tensive daily training neces- sary to become a top dancer. Nevertheless, within two brief years, she had cornered a role in the U.S. touring pro- duction of Song of Norway, which led to a role in the touring company of Oklahoma. OVERSEAS DEPARTMENT Oshawa's Shirley Harmer was so popular in England during her recent overseas visit, she has been invited back for further performances in the fall.
